Lions, Argos Score Wins On Friday Night Football

The Canadian Football League’s Week 17 schedule opened with two compelling Friday night games, and both produced important results in increasingly tight playoff races.

B.C. Lions 31, Saskatchewan Roughriders 24

The B.C. Lions continued their remarkable turnaround Friday night, defeating the Saskatchewan Roughriders 31-24 at BC Place to seize control of second place in the West Division.

The Lions led 7-3, 17-13 and 24-13 by quarter in a game they controlled throughout.

Nathan Rourke delivered another outstanding performance for the Lions, completing 27 of 38 passes for 375 yards and four touchdowns while adding 37 rushing yards. The Canadian quarterback repeatedly connected on explosive plays, helping B.C. improve to 8-6 and win seven of its last eight games.

Keon Hatcher Sr. caught two touchdown passes, while Jevon Cottoy and Jermaine Jackson also found the end zone for the Lions. Hatcher finished with 66 receiving yards and surpassed 1,000 yards for the fifth time in his CFL career.

B.C.’s big-play ability was the difference. Stanley Berryhill III had an 80-yard receiving night, Cottoy added 96 yards and Justin McInnis topped the century mark with 111 yards.

Saskatchewan quarterback Trevor Harris threw for 294 yards and a touchdown, while Kian Schaffer-Baker led the Riders with 119 receiving yards on nine catches. Running back A.J. Ouellette made an impressive return from a seven-game absence, rushing for 77 yards and a touchdown.

The loss dropped Saskatchewan to 8-6 and third place in the West. More importantly, B.C. captured the season series 2-1, giving the Lions the tiebreaker over the Riders should the teams finish tied in the standings.

Toronto Argonauts 30, Winnipeg Blue Bombers 28

In Winnipeg, the Toronto Argonauts rallied for a thrilling 30-28 victory over the Blue Bombers at Princess Auto Stadium.

The Argos improved to 9-6 and extended their winning streak to four games, while Winnipeg fell to 7-7.

Chad Kelly threw for 290 yards and two touchdowns, with Damonte Coxie enjoying a monster night with seven catches for 149 yards and a touchdown. Tyler Kahmann added three receptions for 67 yards and a score.

Winnipeg jumped out quickly behind running back Brady Oliveira, who rushed for 79 yards in the first half alone, while quarterback Dru Brown helped establish an early lead.

But Toronto’s defence completely changed the game after halftime. Brown managed only 15 passing yards in the second half and threw two interceptions as the Argonauts rallied. The game featured three fourth-quarter lead changes before Toronto ultimately secured the two-point victory.

The result keeps Toronto firmly in the East Division race while leaving Winnipeg needing to regroup as the Western playoff battle intensifies.
