Friday Commentary: Yikes!

A coupla three or more thoughts entering the weekend …
#1 – Let’s go in order. What a night in the NHL, but a crappy one for Florida teams. The Lightning lost their season-opener, 5-1 at the NY Rangers, and allowed Rangers goalie Igor Shesterkin to score a goal in the loss (look it up). The Panthers lost 4-3 in OT at San Jose, and lost captain Aleksander Barkov in the process. Oy vey!
On the flipside, what in tarnation went on in Vancouver? The Oilers got their first win, knocking off the Canucks 9-7, and the stat sheet is absolutely wild. Meanwhile the Flames got bombed 6-1 by Seattle in their home-opener. I’m officially out on them. I’m not playing this game again.
As far as the awkward ice-level interview with ESPN’s AJ Mleczko and New Jersey’s Jack Hughes went in that game, I feel the reporter owes the Devils captain an apology today.
#2 – Week 4 in the NFL kicked off with the Cleveland Browns outlasting the Pittsburgh Steelers 27-24 on a last-minute field goal by Andre Szmyt. The Browns go to a surprising 3-1. Hey – nobody ever said Deshaun Watson wasn’t a great quarterback – but I’m giving the credit to first-year year head coach Todd Monken.
And #3 – Here we go. Week 18 in the CFL. There’s reason to tune into all four games but it’s a massive one in Sask as the Riders host Calgary. For the green guys, it’s simple. Win and you’re in. However for the Stampeders, if they win by four or more, they’ll take the season series and it’ll be panic in Riderville. Yikes!
The other games are great too but the biggest, and what’ll probably be the best, game is in Toronto where the Argos look for their fifth straight win as they host the red-hot BC Lions. Toronto QB Chad Kelly is 3-0 all-time against BC – although he’s listed as questionable for the game – and the Argos have won five in a row against the Lions at BMO Field.
Kinda feels like the playoffs have started already, doesn’t it it?
