Tuesday Commentary: The Good, The Great & The Ugly

(Listen daily for the RP Commentary on All New Hits 98 & LTD Radio)
It’s Tuesday and time for the Good, the Great & the Ugly!
First the good: The CFL Playoffs are here. That’s probably great, more than it’s good but I wanted it to be today’s lead-off item. I also think it’s very good that the semifinal games were moved to Saturday awhile back, so as to avoid the NFL. We don’t need Game Notes in times like this, but I’ll still gladly read them when they hit my inbox from CFL HQ later this week. But I can already tell you all signs will point to a BC Lions victory over the Roughriders on Saturday at BC Place. They’ve got homefield, the stats, the motivation. All of it.
I’m still taking the Riders. C-A-N N-O-T W-A-I-T.
Next the great: I shoulda seen it coming. It took awhile but mail is pouring in from Las Vegas viewers of the RP Show (virtual mail, that is), who catch the program nightly on Silver State Sports. It’s the only show in Nevada which devotes as much time to the NHL as we do and because of that, and the success ratio of our daily hockey picks for The Tap & Aspen Links Clubhouse, the viewers want more and more hockey betting tips.
Oh my God. That wasn’t the intention. The picks are meant for fun. And you’re better off running a meth lab these days than having anything to do with gambling in this business, and that’s why we had to add the disclaimer that our picks are for entertainment purposes only, and not to be used as betting advice.
Thank goodness I went 0/3 Monday night. That should scare them off for awhile.
And finally the ugly: I’m wildly fascinated with the ongoing Sportsnet+ controversy waging in Canada. It’s the $12.99/month add-on Sportsnet is offering to watch select games for teams like the Leafs, Oilers & Flames. To say it’s not going over well would be an understatement. Frankly, it’s all I’m seeing on my timeline.
A great article in the Toronto Sun Monday quoted a Rogers source as saying their executives are surprised by the backlash but expect people to get over it in time.
I’m not sure that you will. We need gas and power to function. We’re about to find out how much people need NHL hockey.
That’s today’s Rod Pedersen Commentary.
