The Toronto Argonauts have made a major commitment to their franchise quarterback, signing Chad Kelly to a five-year contract extension that will keep the 2023 CFL Most Outstanding Player in Toronto through the 2031 season.
The announcement, made Tuesday, October 27, 2026, secures the services of one of the Canadian Football League’s most dynamic quarterbacks and gives the Argonauts long-term stability at the sport’s most important position. Financial terms of the agreement were not officially disclosed, although sources indicate the deal could be worth more than $1 million annually, potentially making Kelly the CFL’s highest-paid player.
“I’m beyond thrilled to be signing back in Toronto long term,” Kelly said in a statement released by the team. He added that Toronto is where he wants to finish his playing career, citing the city’s importance to his family and his desire to continue chasing championships and records.
The 32-year-old Buffalo native is coming off the most productive regular season of his CFL career. In 16 games, Kelly completed 366 of 516 passes for 5,067 yards and 33 touchdowns, establishing career highs in completions, passing yardage, touchdown passes and completion percentage at 70.9 per cent. He also threw 24 interceptions.
Kelly’s Toronto story began in 2022, when he arrived after spending time with the NFL’s Denver Broncos and Indianapolis Colts. Initially a backup to McLeod Bethel-Thompson, Kelly announced himself on the biggest stage by helping the Argonauts rally past the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in the 2022 Grey Cup.
He took over as Toronto’s starter in 2023 and delivered a historic campaign, leading the Argos to a 16-2 regular-season record before earning the CFL’s Most Outstanding Player award. His combination of arm strength, mobility and playmaking ability quickly established him as one of the league’s premier quarterbacks.
However, Kelly’s career has also been interrupted by injuries. A broken leg suffered in the 2024 Eastern Final forced him to miss the entire 2025 season. His return in 2026 has been impressive, although a knee injury late in the regular season has raised questions about his immediate availability.
Argonauts general manager Michael “Pinball” Clemons praised Kelly’s work ethic, preparation and competitive spirit, saying the extension positions Toronto to remain a championship contender.
The agreement also coincides with the launch of the Chad Kelly Foundation, focused on supporting young people’s mental health and well-being.
For Toronto, the message is clear: Kelly remains central to the franchise’s future. The Argonauts are betting that their star quarterback can deliver more championships while building a legacy that could place him among the greatest players in team history.

To think a few years ago one person with a grudge and no skillset tried to take this man down. Let the lesson be learned; they are always victims but never once admit they are the problem. This young man has already won. He has his Grey Cup ring, reputation in tact and he just signed for the bag$. Hats off to him for creating a foundation for young people’s mental health.
