A WILD CANADA DAY AT MOSAIC STADIUM

Amidst the smoky haze from Northern Saskatchewan’s forest fires, the Saskatchewan Roughriders held Day 1 of their practice week on Canada Day at Mosaic Stadium.  Here’s some of what went down:

– Wednesday morning the Riders announced the re-signing of quarterback Tino Sunseri, who was let go two weeks ago following the preseason.  Sunseri participated in Wednesday’s workout, but had to change his jersey number to 17 since his old number 12 is now occupied by rookie linebacker Telvion Clark.

– Sunseri said he’d spent the past two weeks “decompressing” at home in Florida and his agent fielded a number of calls due to the rash of injuries to CFL quarterbacks in Week 1.  Sunseri said he’s not concerned with the pecking order at quarterback in Saskatchewan, and that he just wants to be the best player he can be.  He humbly added he’s thankful for the opportunity to be back with the Saskatchewan Roughriders.

– Meanwhile veteran kicker Chris Milo was not present at the practice.  Afterwards head coach Corey Chamblin announced Milo has been de-activated and will not practice for the rest of the week.  The six-year veteran was 1/2 on field goals and 2/2 on converts in Saturday’s 30-26 loss to Winnipeg.

– And then Chamblin dropped the bomb that veteran kicker Paul McCallum has been added and will be in Regina by week’s end.  Chamblin said he wasn’t entirely comfortable with the kicking situation coming out of training camp and that he needs field goals to be “automatic” from a certain range.

– Receiver/returner Nic Demski and cornerback Marshay Green did not practice.

– The 0-1 Riders host the 1-0 Toronto Argonauts Sunday at 1:30 pm on TSN and the CKRM Rider Radio Network.

"Reeking of desperation".. I am appalled by the stupidity of some people posting lately! There has been one week played in the CFL and as usual a couple of idiots out there are squawking like chickens. Lets see how things look after Labour Day at least, then try and predict what the Riders chances are. The only sure bet now is that by losing the first game they will not go 18-0, so get over it! Despite the loss of Durant and the other significant injuries, there is still ample reason to get out to the games and cheer our… Read more »

Old Hank,

Are you at all surprised that so soon after Durant went down, and with him the prospect of an outstanding year for him and the team, that the usual small clan of Taman/O'Day haters moved onto this comment section like vultures? Negativity is their operating principle. Just ignore them and their sad ways because Tam, O'Day, Chamblin are going to be around for years to come.

Thanks Roddy! I am sure you would have loved to spend your holiday out of the office, but as a guy driving home from Saskatchewan Landing provincial park, I was dreading having to get Rider news from the other guys. Low and behold, I hit the old 620 at 405 and there you were. Big day in Riderville and I was glad to drive home and soak it all in along with some NHL news as well.

FYI: The other guys ran a repeat.

I guess they know who #1 is.

I would like to thank BT, Coach Chamblin and the staff for working hard to get the ship righted. We will be fine despite all the negativity expressed here by the forgotten few.

Has anyone noticed Tamman has recruited the top kicker in the CFL last year to play for the Riders……sure wish all these 'Negative Nellies' would stop all this.

Technically Milo was 1 of 2 but, in reality he 1 of 3. Reminds me of 09 GC – too bad Milo wasn't Als kicker that day.

Kerry Joseph last fall, Jamal Richardson last winter and now Tino Sunceri and Paul McCallum.

Rod, why don't you write a nice long article about Brendan Taman's vast network of contacts? Maybe that would shut up those realistic Taman bashers.

This McCallum, "he's a good kid". We've had had him on our radar neg list for some time now. He finally agreed to give Regina a try and we'll sign him and have on the roster in time for Sunday's game against the Argos. Like I said, "he's a good kid", and we're happy to have him. He'll do fine.

Guess who?
Clue;
he smak him lips when he talks.
