ALOUETTES 20 REDBLACKS 10
MONTREAL – S.J. Green caught a touchdown pass and Jonathan Crompton was a winner in his first career start at quarterback as the Montreal Alouettes downed the Ottawa Redblacks 20-10 to end a six-game losing streak on Friday night.
James Rodgers scored a touchdown in his first CFL game while Sean Whyte added a field goal and had three punts roll into the end zone for singles for Montreal (2-7), which moved into second place in the feeble East Division.
Wallace Miles had a 27-yard pass-and-run TD in the fourth quarter and Brett Maher had a field goal on Ottawa’s opening drive as the Redblacks (1-8) lost a sixth game in a row.
A season low of 19,440 turned out to Percival Molson Stadium for a flag-filled game that until the fourth quarter had few big plays from either offence to cheer.
Crompton, who relieved Alex Brink in the second quarter of a loss last week in Winnipeg, looked comfortable behind centre and led some promising drives, but struggled to get the ball into the end zone.
It was third-stringer Tanner Marsh, who plays in short-yardage situations, that threw the one-yard touchdown pass to Green in the first quarter.

Burris looks more and more fusterated each week. Wonder if Ottawa will go after Chris Williams now that the bears released him and they have 250k sitting around…
Hamilton own William's rights… but I doubt he is coming to CFL. Some other NFL will almost certainly pick him up….
Given time, Crompton might emerge as a Drew Willy-style QB for Montreal. He has an excellent group of receivers.
Hamilton does not own his rights – he is a free agent like Dressler (was).
Montreal franchise is doomed. The crowds will get smaller, money will be lost and the owner will bail. The CFL will own the ALS, Agros, and TiCats in Avery short time. Soon the GC rotation will be Hamilton, Toronto, Montreal. It too will have dwindling crowds.
In fact, Williams has to return to the Ti-Cats because of a special deal made when he was freed up to go south after refusing to play. If the Ti-cats do get Chris Williams and Gaydosh soon, it could make for a tough battle for the Riders when they meet for the second time this year. It is also possible they could trade Williams to bolster another part of their roster – maybe for Drew Tate?
Lots of talent available from the NFL with all the cuts. Maybe we will see Ottawa go for Marcus Thigpen. The teams in the east need to do some serious upgrades soon to become more competitive and keep their fans engaged. .
Do the team owners really know how to market? Community teams seem to be better business operators. Is it because they draw on broad base of local business talent and not just at the whim of one person? Or is it because the community feels ownership and that transcends into more support in tough times?
