WHL – Connor Gay had a goal and two assists in Regina’s 8-1 win against the Hurricanes Saturday night in Lethbridge.

Colby Williams, Morgan Kilmchuk, Patrick D’Amico, Austin Wagner and Dryden Hunt also scored for the Pats (5-4-1) who are 1-1-0 on their three-game road trip through the WHL’s Central Division.

Carter Folk scored for his first goal of the year in the first period for Lethbridge (1-8-1).  The Pats wind up the road trip Sunday in Calgary.  The game can be heard on CKRM2 (www.sportscage.ca).  Regina is home to Portland Tuesday evening.

CFL – Tanner Marsh and S.J. Green scored touchdowns to lead the Montreal Alouettes past the Toronto Argonauts 20-12 on Saturday afternoon.

Marsh’s one-yard TD run just 18 seconds into the fourth staked Montreal (7-8) to a 20-6 advantage before a sparse Rogers Centre gathering of 16,834 with the roof closed. Green’s 10-yard touchdown catch gave the Alouettes to a 13-6 half-time advantage.

Montreal moved into a tie for first in the East Division with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats (7-8) with their fourth straight victory. The Alouettes also improved to 6-1 with Jonathan Crompton as their starter as he completed 19-of-28 passes for 219 yards and a TD.

But Crompton got a huge assist from a Montreal defence that held Toronto out of the end zone. The Argos had scored 140 points in their previous four games.

After Toronto came back from a 17-point deficit last week in a 34-33 win over Hamilton, Ricky Ray literally fell just short Saturday. His run on third-and-one was short of the first down at the Montreal 35 with 1:27 remaining.

But the Argos had plenty of chances late in the game.

CFL – Jon Cornish ran nine yards for a touchdown with 1:25 remaining to ensure the Calgary Stampeders clinched first place in the CFL West Division with a 33-23 win Saturday over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

Cornish finished with 21 carries for 160 yards.

Bo Levi Mitchell, who missed the last three games with knee and ankle injuries, threw TD passes to Brad Sinopoli and Joe West to up Calgary’s record to 13-2 with its third straight win.

Winnipeg (6-10) lost its seventh game in a row in front of a season-low crowd of 22,320 at Investors Group Field on a cold, windy night.

The loss didn’t officially eliminate the Bombers from playoff contention, but their hopes are slim as they host the B.C. Lions (8-7) next week in a game between clubs trying to get a cross-over berth into the East Division playoff picture.

Winnipeg running back Paris Cotton had touchdown runs of 35 and 10 yards, including one at 7:39 of the fourth quarter that squeezed Calgary’s lead to 26-23.

NHL – The Pittsburgh Penguins are off to a 3-1-0 start after handing the New York Islanders their first loss in five games this season.

Patric Hornqvist had two goals and an assist as the Pens downed the Isles 3-1 on Saturday. New York led until Evgeni Malkin and Hornqvist scored power-play goals 55 seconds apart late in the second period.

Marc-Andre Fleury stopped 34 shots and blanked the Islanders after Thomas Hickey scored six minutes into the game.

Elsewhere on ice:

– Wilcox’s Jaden Schwartz had a big game in the St. Louis Blues’ 6-1 pounding of Arizona, registering his first NHL hattrick and collecting four points. Blues rookie Jori Lehtera’s added a goal and two assists after going scoreless in his first three games.  Lauri Korpikoski had Arizona’s lone goal, breaking the shutout bid of Jake Allen late in the third period.

– Washington scored on all three of its three shutout attempts to beat Florida 2-1. Jason Chimera scored in regulation and Justin Peters stopped 20 shots as the Capitals improved to 3-0-2.

– Joe Pavelski and Logan Couture each had a goal and an assist as San Jose topped New Jersey 4-2 to improve to 4-0-1. The Sharks held off the Devils’ late rally after Patrick Marleau put San Jose ahead 3-0 early in the third period.

– Montreal tops the Eastern Conference at 5-1-0 after P.K. Subban scored twice in the second period of the Canadiens’ 3-2 victory against Colorado. Alex Galchenyuk scored once and had an assist in the Habs’ three-goal middle period.

– Ottawa beat Columbus 3-2 on Mike Hoffman’s goal midway through the final period. Robin Lehner made 17 of his 38 saves in the final period.

– Philadelphia trailed twice in the third period before Claude Giroux’s goal at 2:49 over overtime pushed the Flyers past the Stars 6-5 in Dallas. Jakub Voracek had a goal and two assists to help the Flyers overcome Trevor Daley’s two power-play goals for the Stars.

– Jonathan Toews scored a short-handed, unassisted goal 3:26 into OT to complete Chicago’s 2-1 win over Nashville. Johnny Oduya scored 1:49 after the opening faceoff and Corey Crawford stopped 19 shots for the 3-0-1 Blackhawks.

– Tampa Bay was a 4-2 winner at Vancouver as Steven Stamkos scored twice and had an assist for the Lightning. Ryan Callahan’s power-play goal snapped a 2-2 tie late in the second period.

NFL – Peyton Manning is three touchdown passes away from making history. The Broncos quarterback heads into tonight’s game against the San Francisco 49ers in Denver needing just three T-D passes to bring his career total to 509. The would break the N-F-L record of 508 set by Brett Favre.

Around the league, St. Louis hosts the reigning Super Bowl Champion Seahawks, Chicago is home to Miami, Green Bay welcomes Carolina, Baltimore opens its doors to Atlanta, and Buffalo takes on the Minnesota Vikings at Ralph Wilson Stadium. Later in the day, the Kansas City Chiefs visit San Diego, Arizona plays the Raiders in Oakland, and the Giants challenge the Cowboys in Dallas in an NFC East matchup.
