AN ACTUAL DURANT UPDATE

SportsCage/Sportsnet CFL Insider Arash Madani had some welcome news regarding the contract talks between the Riders and Darian Durant on Thursday afternoon.

Madani reported on Twitter that a CFL source says the Roughriders made a new contract offer to Durant this week.  A Rider source seemed to confirm that story, saying the club has now tabled an offer with a base salary of $300,000 with performance incentives topping out at $400,000 in 2017.

Madani further reported that he feels Montreal will be in line for Durant’s services come free agency on February 14 so he may wait to see what he can fetch on the open market.

A CFL executive told me today that he feels Durant is a $400,000 quarterback and he may be able to get it in free agency.  Madani’s report suggested the Riders don’t want to “lock in on a high cap number on a QB with Durant’s injury track record”.

**UPDATE: A Roughrider source told me Thursday evening that the Madani report is inaccurate regarding term and figures in the new offer.

Stay tuned.

"lock in on a high cap number on a QB with Durant's injury track record".

Please!!

Durant has been nothing but a warrior his entire career. The arm injury in 2014 was from an after the whistle hit that never should have happened & his achilles injury in 2015 was an exception & the rule.

He might not be "the future", but he sure as hell has a few good years left.

Sign the man already!!!

Guys like you are why we lost millions in 2015 when we were paying Dressler, Chick, Durant & Getzlaf combined about 53% of the total player salary budget! If we keep listening to fans who would bankrupt us … we won't have a team. Get real !

Chick, Durant, and Getzlaf about 53%?
So they were averaging over a million each?

Actually it's fans like you that do not understand the QB position and make ridiculous embarrassing replies to a sound comment about resigning Durant. Your numbers on Chic and Dressler were way off. Plus there isn't a CFL team that isn't paying their starting QB at least $300K with bonuses and incentives except Montreal. Any time Darian had a team around him he performed at a high level and made the Ridets very competitive. Like Jones said last year. NFL ALL STAR Tom Brady couldn't have won games with the Oline and running back situation on the Ridets offence. The… Read more »

Yawn… Previous admin egeriously spoiled Durant with outrageous high (750k?) number player contract. Current actual number asking price, 425-500k+. Montreal with private pockets would be the destination.

I'll ride on DD's track record before I ride on Jone's track record in Sask. All he's done is lose.

with a new team after dumping over paid guys who were a horrible team the year before, maybe check the previous yrs record and what Jones inherited. Durant has missed 2 full seasons, if hes not willing to take performance bonus's what does that say about his own confidence!

Durant's injury track record ????? What a crock of S_ _ T by jones !!!!

That is a reasonable offer. And two major injuries costing him half of 2014 and all of 2015 plus several games in 2016 do warrant some caution.

The difference is Jones is building with his head and many fans are with their hearts.

If this team does not sign Durant I will personally picket the Rider's office, and bring all my Rider friends.

And, I have lots of those!

Is that not what they just proved they are trying to do. Does this guy deserve more than 400,000?

Bo levi makes it work at a reported 350,000.

Darian will now show if he actually wants to be in Sask. You are using circumstances to downplay facts. The facts are Durant has won four games in 16 starts over the last two seasons. Play 18 games and earn your money. It's the Saskatchewan way!

The O-line won a lot more games than Durant did somehow? Stats suggest the O-line was pretty bad but Durant put up pretty good passing yardage anyway.

Durant contact worth – 200k – 240k.
280k top end max based on performance incentives.
Very reasonable offer taking in consideration comparable Bo Levi Mitchell 350k who is CFL elite.

Keith is so right. In Pro sports teams negotiate with their HEADS, Idiot fans promote with their HEARTS. ULTIMATELY it is the heads that win out. The offer to DD is very realistic. If Montreal wants to pay him a pile then let it be.With Durant healthy he will pout if he doesn't play, so how in the world do we groom a young QB ?????DD has said he wants to play & says he has 10 good years left & that he is an elite, best QB in Canada. He is dreaming & so are some fans & Scribes… Read more »

The smart thing to do is sign Durant . If Jones thinks he can find another QB then he can always release Durant and be off the hook for the remainder of his salary . CFL contracts are not guaranteed tIL after labour day for veteran players and not at all for rookies .

I think this is a fair offer. Let's see how bad he really wants to play in Saskatchewan.

0-10 to start last year as a healthy QB. I know you all want to blame the o-line, receivers, and coaches but 0-10 no matter who you want to blame, also has to lay on DD's shoulders as well. If he is elite he would have won a couple of those games. Durant wants to be paid on his past reputation. If he is so good then sign the deal and get paid on bonuses reached. It would make him the 4th highest in the league which in reality is pretty much where he belongs. It's a fair offer, now… Read more »

Rod,
How much was Doubles originally asking for? I remember you had it in one of your blog posts just after the regular season ended.

I feel like this deal should satisfy both sides then… gives him the chance to earn an extra $50k and gives us a safety net if he gets hurt…

SIGN DURANT TO A NEW CONTRACT! We need to have a real QB leading our team in 2017. Don't try and sell a no-name QB on us, Jones. No Durant = no winning team AGAIN!

Very fair offer, maybe even too good but Jones is listening to whiner fans. If DD doesn't sign, he is a greedy idiot!

I believe DD will sign for that, if in fact it's true. Arash has been known to fill in the blanks in order to get a scoop. And when that happens there's never an apology or retraction.
