The Red Sox don't appear to have the quality of management they once did, as early as a few years back. They have slid back the last couple years. Pitching is spotty and usually shuts down their bats. Maybe it's not spending enough money or poor personal decisions. It may be a while before they ever see another championship. Some teams in the league take it very seriously and always seem to have a contender.
