BELL/TSN, MLSE LOOKING TO BUY ARGOS

Larry Tanenbaum

Toronto Argonauts owner David Braley is in talks with Maple Leafs Sports and Entertainment chairman Larry Tanenbaum and Bell Media about purchasing the CFL club, according to reports.

The 73-year-old Braley has been actively searching for a buyer to take over the franchise for some time.

TSN and the Toronto Star say he’s negotiating with Bell and Tanenbaum.

The CFL confirmed on Monday that Braley is in talks to sell the club, but would not confirm who all is involved with the negotiations.

“We’re aware that discussions are currently taking place between owner David Braley and certain interested parties regarding the Toronto Argonauts,” the league said in a press release. “Out of respect to all parties involved, we are going to allow this process to take its course and we will not be commenting any further while negotiations are ongoing.”

If a deal was to go through, it’s believed that the CFL club would move its home games to BMO Field, the current home of MLSE’s Toronto FC. The team’s lease at its current stadium, the Rogers Centre, expires after the 2017 season and won’t be renewed.

The CFL will probably guarantee the new owners about 5 out of 6 Grey Cup games so they can make their payments.
Move them to the Maritimes. The people of Toronto don't deserve to see the likes of Ricky Ray and Chad Owens.

Not sure how much you can blame the people of Toronto. Yes they are a bunch of wannabe's and media is anti-CFL. However Rogers has done everything they can to destroy the Argo franchise with poor availability of dates. A smaller venue and you'll find enough proud Canadians to make this franchise work.

My reply to comments 1-3: 1) Maritimes may or may not get a CFL franchise in the future, but if you want to gut the largest market by taking away the Argos out of Toronto, you will have no league left over and the CFL as we know will be done. Note that you can consider a team in the Maritimes without taking relocating the Argos… seems simple enough. 2) The MLSE which owns the Toronto FC of the MLS, as well the Leafs and Raptors, seems a great fit.
