BOMBERS 45 ARGONAUTS 21

WINNIPEG (CP) – They put points on the board, now the Winnipeg Blue Bombers have to put fans back in the seats as they opened the CFL season with a convincing 45-21 win over the Toronto Argonauts Thursday night.

It was a welcome change from the past couple of seasons as they dominated the Argos on both sides of the ball, although coach Mike O’Shea said they made enough mistakes to show more work needs to be done.

Drew Willy’s debut as Winnipeg’s starting quarterback was nothing short of stunning for fans who have known little but disappointment the last two seasons. He threw four touchdown passes.

“He just ran a good game. The No. 1 thing quarterbacks have to do, what they’re in charge of, is winning,” said O’Shea. “He went out there and he helped win the game for us.”

O’Shea said it probably surprised some people. Willy had started only four games and won just one as a backup in Saskatchewan for the last two seasons.

But the players, including Willy, said they weren’t surprised. The team has changed a lot from the one that went 3-15 last season.

“I kind of thought I could do it but I’m a confident guy,” said Willy. “I knew if I went through my reads and did everything possible things would go right … We got off to a good start. It was nice on the first drive to score.”

Even Argos head coach Scott Milanovich praised Willy’s efforts on the field.

“They protected the passer well and Drew made the throws that were there,” Milanovich said. “Give him a lot of credit, that was an excellent first start for him.”

Aaron Kelly at wide receiver caught two of those touchdown passes as he opened his first full season with the Bombers with a 100-yard game.

“I’m going to change his name, Big Play Kelly,” said O’Shea, who saw in a game what Kelly showed in camp.

He joined the Bombers midway through last season.

“I feel I’ve got a good opportunity here,” said Kelly, who entered his fourth season in the CFL and won an opener for the first time.

He spent 2011 and 2012 with the Hamilton Tiger-Cats.

“I worked hard to win the starting spot here and just wanted to come out and start fast and help the team win.”

Penalties crippled the Argos, who had 22 to just seven for the Bombers, and 16 in the first half alone. O’Shea said they were a huge part of the game and noted one of Winnipeg’s, for too many men, led to one of Toronto’s touchdowns.

Milanovich said his team needs to learn from the mistakes it made on the field Thursday.

“There’s three things we point to that win or lose football games: protecting the football, penalties, and protecting the quarterback, and we lost every phase of that …” Milanovich said. “We simply can’t win with that many penalty flags.”

After a couple of poor seasons, Winnipeg has some work to do to bring back the crowds at Investors Group Field.

There were almost 9,000 empty seats Thursday night and at 24,872, only barely beat the 24,000 who attended the Bombers’ pre-season tilt against the Argos three weeks ago.

Bombers president Wade Miller could be seen walking through the stands personally greeting fans Thursday night.

“As much as the players that have been here the last few years need this win, so did the fans and our players appreciate that,” said O’Shea.

“This community needs this. The players needs to understand that it’s bigger than them too.”

Saskatchewan should have dropped-traded the aging Durant like a sack of rotting potatoes as they did Joseph after GC victory and kept/signed the young up and coming CFL superstar Drew Willy instead of trading him away.

You knew that DRIPS like this would come out of the wood works to impart their vast knowledge on the Rider QB situation. Wow Roddie! I thought the Rider Nation was brighter than that!

Drew Willy looked great, it's sure too bad we couldn't keep him but I understand.

DD won a grey cup and is top 2 Rider QB ever. He was also better every day in practice. We would take him every day of the week. Anyone who questions that is crazy.

The eye roller, It took him forever to get where he's finally at while growing old in the process. Riders need to find a young long term prospect asap ready to step in when the time comes to take the reins of the team.

How can anyone even suggest trading DD?? Are you NUTS??? Drew Willy had a great game yesterday…Toronto DID NOT do anything right in that game which made it easy for the Bombers to beat them like they did.

Winnipeg ripped the Argos a new Ahole right out of the gate last night, the Blue Bombers were prepped and ready, Argos? Drew Willy was throwing amazing accurate passes from the get go, he was ready for his debut as a bonofide starting QB of his own team.

Winnipeg did look good last night, but Toronto’s defense looked utterly lost (and they probably should considering they only have 1 returning starter).

Winnipeg will be judged when they play an actual defense

They did bring QB's in to step up if something happens to DD. Nothing happens overnight…it takes time and practice.

"Growing old in the process"???

Durant's 31. He could easily play until he's 40. He has most of his career ahead of him and is just entering his prime.

Anybody thinks that Durant is "old" is clueless. Totally clueless.

How dumb is this!!! Last nite I was pulling for Drew to do well. Then it hit me. If he looks good and DD has a so so game on Sunday … WATCH OUT! Those anti DD (or any Rider starting QB) whiners will crawl back out into the light. I was wrong … didn't even need a so so DD game. (The need to be negative is an interesting study of poor self esteem)

In about 1969 we had the 'Lancaster Haters' but we also had the 'He's getting old and who have we got to replace him' worriers. They could hardly enjoy 'the ride' as they pulled for Ronnie to look bad and/or worried about his successor. They missed about 10 years of fun.

Did the riders ever win a gc after 66? Enjoy 'the the ride'? no championships?

At a comparable time in their quarterbacking careers (or earlier if they started hot out of the gate), there are only 5 QBs that have played since 2000 and that have better stats than Durant: Dickenson, Ray, Tate, Lulay and Pierce. If you want to get rid of Durant, and want a QB that will play more than half the year, then you are going to have to roll the dice with a rookie QB. Personally, I'll take the guy whose stats in his last three starts are untouchable, our man Doubles.

The Bombers were better prepared to play the game last night than Argos.

The Argos probably rolled into Winnipeg and thought that the Bombers would be the same old push over.

Big mistake, the Bombers will not sneak up on anybody after handing the Argos that one sided loss.

The Riders made the right choice to trade Willy, I just wish that they got more in return.

GO RIDERS

I find it interesting, actually baffling, how some 'fans' can't enjoy the game (the ride) unless we win the GC. You are missing a ton of fun and excitement.
