Whitehead played the past three seasons with the Lions but wasn’t re-signed. He inked a deal in early July with the Blue Bombers, the team he began his career with in 2019. He finished with six receptions for 56 yards.
Castillo connected on field goals from 37, 60, 32, 51, 32 and 11 yards. It was his second successful kick from 60 yards this season.
The victory in front of 31,589 fans at Princess Auto Stadium moved Winnipeg’s record to 3-6 and evened their season series with B.C. at one win apiece.
The Lions dropped to 5-3 with their lowest offensive outing of the season. The fewest points they had scored this season prior to Thursday’s game was 24, recorded in two separate games.
Bombers quarterback Zach Collaros completed 27 of 33 pass attempts for 295 with one TD and no interceptions. Winnipeg rookie receiver Ontaria Wilson led all receivers with seven catches for 112 yards. Running back Brady Oliveira rushed 17 times for 100 yards.
Lions quarterback Vernon Adams Jr. left the game after being sacked at 2:29 of the fourth quarter. He was replaced by Jake Dolegala.
Lions head coach Rick Campbell says quarterback Vernon Adams Jr. is likely out “on the order of weeks, not months or longer” after injuring his right knee.

- The Hamilton Tiger-Cats will look to string together a third-straight win Friday when they host the defending Grey Cup champions Montreal Alouettes. The Ticats are coming off a 44-28 win over Edmonton last week and a 27-24 victory against Toronto the week before, lifting the team’s record to 2-and-5. Montreal, at 6-and-1, leads the CFL in points and will feature quarterback Davis Alexander in his first start for the Alouettes.

- CANTON, Ohio (AP) — While Caleb Williams, C.J. Stroud and other starters from both teams watched from the sideline, the NFL’s new kickoffs didn’t provide any excitement. Brett Rypien stole the show before lighting and heavy rain ended the game. The veteran quarterback threw three touchdown passes, leading the Chicago Bears to a 21-17 victory over the Houston Texanson Thursday night in the Hall of Fame game. The NFL’s exhibition opener was stopped with 3:31 left in the third quarter and was called off after a 36-minute delay. All eyes were on the NFL’s radical new kickoffs rule at the start. The league dramatically redesigned the play, aiming to revive it after a record-low returns last season.
- LOS ANGELES (AP) — A federal judge overturned a jury’s $4.7 billion verdict in the class-action lawsuit filed by “Sunday Ticket” subscribers against the NFL and granted judgment to the NFL. U.S. District Judge Philip Gutierrez ruled Thursday that the testimony of two witnesses for the subscribers had flawed methodologies and should have been excluded. The jury on June 27 awarded $4.7 billion in damages to residential and commercial subscribers after it ruled the NFL violated antitrust laws in distributing out-of-market Sunday afternoon games on a premium subscription service.

The Toronto Blue Jays have signed 21-year-old pitcher Trey Yesavage, the club’s 2024 first round pick. Yesavage spent the last three seasons at East Carolina University, going 11-and-1 this past season with an E-R-A of 2.03. Toronto selected the right-handed pitcher with the 20th overall pick in last month’s M-L-B draft. The Jays visit the New York Yankees Friday night.

- Toronto’s Summer McIntosh is continuing her quest to add more medals to her Paris Olympics collection today as she heads to the semifinals of the women’s 200-metre individual medley.
- Canada’s women’s soccer team is a day away from round 1 of the knockout stage in the Olympics tournament, where they will face Germany in Marseille on Saturday.
- The Canadian men’s basketball team will look to go undefeated in group play when it takes on Spain Friday. RJ Barrett and Shai Gilgeous-Alexander lead the team in scoring with 23.5 and 18.5 per game respectively, while Spain is led by Memphis Grizzlies centre Santi Aldama’s 23 points per game. The Canadians have won close matchups so far this tournament against Greece 86-79 and Australia 93-83.

- The defending CEBL champion Scarborough Shooting Stars (12-8) will begin their quest to repeat as they open the post-season with an Eastern Conference Play-in matchup against the Ottawa BlackJacks (9-11).The Western Conference side off things features between the No. 3 seed Calgary Surge (11-9) and No. 4 seed Winnipeg Sea Bears (9-11) in a Play-In game on Friday. The winner getting to take on the Edmonton Stingers just two days later in the West Semifinal.
