The Toronto Maple Leafs disastrous trip in California continued. Focusing on the PGA Tour is paying off for Paul Casey — so far. Casey made nine birdies in the first round of the Sony Open and is tied for the lead with Webb Simpson at 8-under 62. Casey is playing the Sony Open for the first time in a decade after giving up his European Tour membership.

Canadian alpine skier Erik Guay has pushed back his return to competition and will sit out the upcoming world championships. The 33-year-old Olympian had surgery to replace cartilage and bone in his left knee in June. His hope was to be back on the slopes in January to prepare for the upcoming alpine world championships in Colorado. However, he has not progressed as expected, forcing Guay to push back the timetable for his return.
