The Montreal Alouettes jumped out to an early lead, then held off the Hamilton Tiger-Cats’ late rally in a 33-23 win at Percival Molson Stadium on Saturday night.
Montreal’s defence made the difference on the night, forcing two turnovers and frustrating Hamilton’s offence early, after registering three take-aways in their 33-16 win last week in Hamilton.
Ticats starting quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell was pulled from the game in the first quarter after throwing an early interception. Taylor Powell came on in relief, completing 30 passes for 319 yards and two touchdowns, while also leading Hamilton in rushing with 52 yards on the ground.
In his second straight start, Als quarterback Davis Alexander connected on 17 of his 24 passing attempts for 247 yards and two touchdowns.

- The Edmonton Elks, who won their first game of the C-F-L season last week in Regina, will be looking to make it two in a row today when they host the B-C Lions. The Lions, coming off a 25-0 spanking by the Winnipeg Blue Bombers on August 1st, are 5-and-3 and in second place in the West Division, one point behind the front-running Saskatchewan Roughriders. The 1-and 7 Elks are last in the five-team West.

Swimmer Summer McIntosh and hammer thrower Ethan Katzberg have been named Canada’s flag-bearers for today’s closing ceremonies at the Paris Olympics. The 17-year-old McIntosh of Toronto became Canada’s first triple gold-medallist and also won a silver medal in swimming. She also set two Olympic records in the pool. Katzberg of Nanaimo, B-C, claimed gold in men’s hammer throw.

The Toronto Blue Jays will be aiming to win a series against the visiting Oakland Athletics Sunday when the American League teams meet in the third game of their weekend matchup. The Jays, last in the A-L East, were beaten 1-0 in a pitcher’s duel yesterday but beat the A’s 3-1 on Friday. Right-hander Chris Bassitt will be on the mound for the Jays on Sunday, while left-hander J-P Sears will start for the A’s, who are last in the A-L West.

The Canadian Elite Basketball League’s top two regular-season teams will meet in today’s championship final at Montreal’s Verdun Auditorium after barely getting past their conference finals. Khalil Ahmad’s three-pointer in Target Time lifted the Niagara River Lions past the host Montreal Alliance 78-75 in the East final, while Zach Copeland drained a game-winning three in Target Time to give the Vancouver Bandits an 89-87 win over the Calgary Surge.

(AP) — Caleb Williams showed signs of promise in the No. 1 draft pick’s preseason debut, overseeing a pair of drives ending in field goals in the Chicago Bears’ 33-6 victory over the Buffalo Bills on Saturday. The 22-year-old out of Southern California completed four of seven attempts for 95 yards, and also converted a third-and-9 by bolting out of the pocket for a 13-yard gain.

(AP) — Jayden Daniels ran for a touchdown after throwing a perfectly placed deep pass for his first NFL completion to get Washington into New York territory in their preseason-opening loss. Daniels, the No. 2 overall pick from LSU, and most of the Commanders’ starters on offense played just the opening series against Jets backups — and the young QB kept it going on his second pass when he connected with Dyami Brown for 42 yards along the right sideline on third-and-6 from Washington’s 34.

CLEVELAND (AP) — Jordan Love made the most of limited playing time, throwing a 65-yard touchdown pass to Dontayvion Wicks on Green Bay’s third play as they rolled to an exhibition win over Cleveland. Love, who signed a four-year, $220 million contract extension at the start of training camp last month, completed both pass attempts in his one series on the field. Sean Clifford replaced the 25-year-old Love.

(AP) — New Orleans rookie quarterback Spencer Rattler led the winning drive in final minute, providing a spark in his bid to become the team’s backup quarterback this season, and they beat Arizona. Rattler — a fifth-round selection out of South Carolina — spearheaded a 12-play, 56-yard drive in the final two minutes, capped by a 37-yard field goal from Charlie Smyth with five seconds left.
