RIDER NOTES, CFL NEWS

REGINA – The Saskatchewan Roughriders’ offense took another hit on Monday, however they reported some good news on another front.

The Riders have placed receiver Taj Smith on their six-game injured list with a broken clavicle. Smith will be out for at least the remainder of the regular season.

Smith was injured Friday in Saskatchewan’s 24-0 road loss to Edmonton. He had a breakout season in 2013, amassing 1,007 yards and adding seven touchdowns during his team’s run to the Grey Cup title.  Smith has 397 yards and three touchdowns on 29 catches this season.

Meanwhile Rider coach Corey Chamblin said injured starting quarterback Darian Durant is on track with the rehab of his injured throwing elbow and expects he could be throwing the football within 2-3 weeks.  Rider GM Brendan Taman later reported on CKRM’s SportsCage that their plan is to activate Durant to their roster for the Riders’ final game of the regular season at Calgary.

Chamblin also said no decision has been made on a starting quarterback for Friday’s home game against the Stampeders (8:00 pm, TSN, CKRM Rider Radio Network).  Chamblin said they’ll decide between Tino Sunseri and Seth Doege by Wednesday at the latest.  Over in Calgary, Stamps coach John Hufnagel said Monday their starting quarterback could be a game time decision.

Also during his weekly radio appearance on 620 CKRM, Brendan Taman confirmed Arash Madani’s report from earlier Monday that the Riders approached Ottawa RedBlacks GM Marcel Desjardins over the weekend about the trade availability of quarterback Henry Burris.  However Taman said the asking price for the 39-year old pivot is far too high.

VANCOUVER – B.C. Lions running back Andrew Harris will miss the rest of the CFL regular season with a dislocated left ankle. The Lions said Harris will undergo surgery Tuesday.

He has been placed on the club’s six-game injured list. Harris was hurt in the fourth quarter of the Lions’ 14-7 loss in Calgary on Saturday. He was in obvious discomfort after being hit and needed assistance to leave the field.

Harris, a Winnipeg native, is the Lions’ leading rusher this season with 652 yards and two touchdowns. The Lions also announced that receiver Bryan Burnham has been placed on the six-game injured list with a lacerated spleen.

TORONTO – Chad Kackert won’t be making his return to the Toronto Argonauts this weekend against the Edmonton Eskimos.

The veteran running back had his first on-field practice with the Argos since being added to the practice roster Saturday.

Kackert retired on the opening day of training camp to become Toronto’s strength-and-conditioning coach after suffering a broken left ankle prior to the 2013 East Division final that required surgery.

Head coach Scott Milanovich says the Argos will take a cautious approach regarding if and when Kackert can return to the lineup but added Kackert won’t play Saturday when Toronto hosts Edmonton.

The five-foot-eight, 206-pound Kackert signed with Toronto as a free agent in 2010, appearing in 24 games over three seasons. He ran for 1,467 yards and 12 touchdowns on 228 carries while adding 50 catches for 454 yards and two TDs.

Just got in from work after listening to first half hour. MAM is clueless yet again. The 3rd and short was on what the 4th or 5th play of the game? Many more plays came after that. If that is what demoralizes you, then it doesn't say a lot about the mental health of this team and I think they are a lot stronger than that. What a joke!

Injuries decimating CFL teams this year. Sorry to hear about Taj Smith. He is one receiver that could stretch defenses. Will Corey Williams now come off the practice roster?
Lions new receiver Bryan Burnham looked real good. Sorry to see him go down. Its bad enough that this year there does not appear to be much offense which means boring games of 15-7 etc.
Go Riders

Busted collarbone on a meaningless and poorly thrown ball makes the sting all the more.

Kinda sums things up of late.

If DD returns in 2014, then the injury that has been reported is not accurate. You do not heal from a torn elbow tendon in that time frame. Either the Riders are not being honest with the recovery process and are dangling that carrot out there for people who will say the season isn't over yet or they have not been honest with the actual injury.

Or perhaps you arent qualified to make medical assessments. Also, look up Doug Flutie's torn elbow tendon recovery in 1995. Had surgery in early September and returned to the line up to play in the grey cup game in November.

Riders have absolutely no obligation to tell fans/competitors EVERYTHING about a player's injury. This information is between the Team – the Player – and his Doctor. Confidentiality !!!

Rider fans are NOT on the "need to know" list. Contrary to some "fans" opinion you do not need to be told every little thing so just Shut The Hell Up.

Will there be an apology tomorrow for the Ray Rice joke you gave today? You have no class Pedersen! None! How you can have any friends out there is beyond me!

Don't worry Tino. Even the likes of Tom Brady can get shut out for 3 quarters and get the hook.

It ain't the end of the world.

The Ray Rice joke was by a listener texting into the show, it was not made by Rod Pedersen. Haters need to get their facts straight before spouting off!

Tom Brady and Tino Sunseri could compare notes about having an offense not execute plays and crumble under pressure.

Relax everyone! We get so caught up in 'will we win the cup' that we don't enjoy the ride. Odds are 1/9 winning the cup. Sports has become an 'all that matters is winning'. Yeh yeh I get that … it is the 'objective'. But if you take it literally then why not line up and toss a coin. Oh … you want to run some plays. So the plays are important? Of course they are and some are very entertaining even if you lose. Hate to lose … we all do. But keep things in perspective and enjoy the… Read more »

Before throwing Sunseri and Doege under the bus, let's realize that not even Durant, who had 3-1,000 yard receivers last year, was lighting it up through the air. The problem clearly lies in a deteriorated receiving corps from last year, plus Cortez refusal to use the three-headed rushing monster. In other words, there's plenty of blame to go around. Are the Riders going to get killed by Calgary this Friday? Probably! But we have to give these guys and this team some time to get it together.

Doug Flutie returned from the EXACT same injury in seven weeks … so whats the problem?

It's not Tommy John, it is a torn tendon that was surgically repaired. If in the next few weeks he tries activity and isn't there he wont go. Simple.

Rod Pedersen did NOT make the joke about Ray Rice!

I regret to write that I missed that portion of the show, and I wish it were me that made the Ray Rice joke, as I'm a big fan of his. – My ideal boys night out to Stats would be me, Ray Rice, Donald Sterling, and Roger Clemens.

We'd do it up right that's for sure.
