CFL THROWS THE BOOK AT RIDERS’ RICHARDS
The Canadian Football League announced that it has imposed its maximum fine on Saskatchewan Roughriders offensive lineman Randy Richards following an illegal and dangerous tackle on Calgary Stampeders returner Tim Brown on Saturday night. Richards was penalized on the play and ejected from the game.
“It is a priority for us, as a league, to foster a culture of health and safety in all that we do, including the standards we set through player discipline,” said Jeffrey L. Orridge, Commissioner of the Canadian Football League.
A hearing took place earlier this week that included Richards, representation from Canadian Football League Players Association (CFLPA), and representation from the CFL, including Commissioner Orridge.
Following the hearing and after reviewing the play on video from every available angle, the Commissioner has decided to impose the highest fine allowed under its collective bargaining agreement with the CFLPA.
The CFL also announced today the following discipline coming from Week 9 games:
Ottawa REDBLACK Nolan MacMillan was fined for a unnecessary hit against the Toronto Argonauts on Sunday.
B.C. Lion Richie Leone was fined for an illegal cut block on a kickoff return versus the Montreal Alouettes on Thursday.
As per league policy, the amount of the player fines was not disclosed.
Let's take up a collection to pay for big Randy's fine
At least he is showing some life on the coverage teams.
Tim Brown was short enough as it was.
Can somebody ask why Swayze Waters gets off clean for his WWE impersonation while Richards receives this fate?
Just an absolute joke Richards was kicked out of that game.
A joke!?! Its an absolute joke that the fans like you would support and cheer this guy who could have ended Tim browns carrer with a head shot like that. Hes lucky he only got one game and not another. Just imagine if someone took Dressler down with a hit like that on a return.
Not as bad as the Hebert hit on Cornish that got nothing last year.
I'm sure his celebrating and high fiving teammates after that dirty hit didn't help his case. Got what he deserved.
Should be suspended for that cheap shot.
Inconsistent fines by an inexperienced Commish. I hope he and the team appeal this fine and force the League to arbitration. The cost of their legal fees and time will far surpass the fine. It's an inappropriate fine for a first time offender and I hope the Riders strike back hard. When you look at the deliberate head shot that Willy took by a Hamilton earlier this year and the guy wasn't even ejected. Willy's gone for a number of games and a routine fine. This was purely reactionary and the guy is back playing a few plays later. This… Read more »
I still think that blind side hit from the stamper receiver on I think Harris is way worse. That hit had nothing to do with the play, but a chance for a receiver to hit someone that wasn't looking. He sure never stuck his nose in there like that when he had to block on a running play.
Those are the kind of hits that have to be removed.
What about Bighill's helmet to helmet in the Sask game, another penalty gone un seen. The list can continue.
From what I have seen in the CFL this year, there is no way that play was worth an ejection or the 25 yard penalty.
Its the spinning wheel of justice from Glenn Johnson again!
I hope Richards got to hear the comments of one Mr. Glen Suitor last night and has words with him the next time the two are together.
Darryl
This player got what he deserved. It was a blatant cheap shot. He should have to miss at least one more game. It was an embarrassment to the team and anyone justifying this hit is not being logical.
Yes, I am a Rider fan and yes I am embarrassed by that play.
Do I have a problem eight the call on the field…no.
Do I have a problem with the fine….no.
What I have a problem with is the consistence of the calls made in this league. How can Swayze Waters deliver the EXACT same hit, the EXACT same week, and not only receive NO penalty, receive NO fine.
For F sakes CFL, get your sh!t together.
Swayze …. Swayze Waters. King of the CFL ….
Don't be hating and quit yo swearing.
Swayze Waters also gets a "must see" highlight on CFL.ca as he "lowers the boom"… This is absurd. Do one or the other, both hits are wrong or they are both okay, there cannot be anymore of this. The league should put on a show and have someone that can explain why things are not a penalty or things are (with all due respect to Ken Pickett, he tries to do this on In the Huddle, but he merely tells us that an incomplete pass is is incomplete because it hit the ground). Take examples from games, this is pass… Read more »
