CFL THROWS THE BOOK AT RIDERS’ MARINO
TORONTO (July 11, 2022) – The Canadian Football League (CFL) has imposed three separate suspensions totaling four games on Saskatchewan Roughrider defensive lineman Garrett Marino for his conduct during his team’s game with the Ottawa REDBLACKS last Friday evening.
It is the league’s most severe total discipline ever imposed for in-game behaviour during one game.
The three separate suspensions to run consecutively are as follows:
- A two-game suspension for Marino’s dangerous and reckless low hit on Ottawa quarterback Jeremiah Masoli on play #123, which resulted in serious injury and Marino’s ejection from the game, and for Marino’s subsequent celebration;
- A one-game suspension for verbal comments Marino made about Masoli’s heritage during the game, which clearly violates our Code of Conduct.
- A one-game suspension for Marino’s illegal and reckless tackle of an Ottawa offensive lineman on a previous play.
The league also cited Marino’s discipline record after 12 CFL career games, which includes a previous ejection and two fines for his manner of play.
“This behaviour has no place in our league,” said Randy Ambrosie, Commissioner of the CFL. “This discipline is intended to send a strong message that it will not be tolerated.”

1 game for racial comments is insane. It’s all or none. If he made racial comments 1 game is not nearly enough. If he didn’t make racial comments 1 game is wrong. The league took a little but pregnant approach to race, it will not go over well.
Who are you Al Sharpton? You gonna lead a million man march? Tell you what if you’re so upset run outside and burn your neighborhood down due to the injustice. You weren’t there Mr. Sensitive. Race? You mean being the league that let’s these guys actually play QB and act as GMs, Head Coaches? Enough with your race baiting. Marino slipped on the turf, the wind propelled him forward, he had on the wrong cleats and it just happened Masoli – who is Italian by the way – didn’t get out of the way. 1 game max. File a grievance… Read more »
Masoli is Samoan you moron. But based on your other hot takes I’m not surprised you’re that ignorant to not know.
agree!! Riders should likely cut Marino and move on from him. He doesnt fit the culture of what the Riders are about.
This is a travesty of justice. Now that mickey mouse CFLPA had better get behind this guy and stand up for him or the players need to decertify. Objectively speaking it’s a questionable at best hit? Get your Rep and you like up every piece of video clips for Simoni Lawrence and go all the way back to the early 1990s with Jeff Braswell. 1 game max! – file a grievance today, be on the field Saturday, head to arbitration and get this bumped down to 2 games. Mr. Marino will find out high time whether his blood brothers the… Read more »
Lol.
Nice try cupcake.
On Saturday I was bashing guys on here for over-reacting negatively to a win. I didn’t like the hit. It wasn’t as egregious as most made it out to be but your assessment is just as wacky.
CFL throws the book at Riders’ Marino. That’s a pretty small book the CFL threw!
where is the suspension of Boyd for the hit on Robertson too!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
WHERE IS THE SUSPENSION FOR THE HIT ON ROBERTSON??????????? THAT WAS AS EQUALLY AS MEAN OF A HIT AS THE MARINO HIT. HE SHOULD GET 2 FOR THAT IF MARINO GOT 2 FOR HIS HIT. FAIR IS FAIR
The question is (Would this hit have taken place if the Boyd hit did not happen. No it wouldnt of happened) . I do not agee with either hit and in particular the way Marino behaved after the hit. Both players should be suspended. Roberston has way more to lose here as Masoli has a good contract (by cfl standards) and Robertson who is a new guy who is trying to make a name for himself and get a decent contract. As a result of this incident the guy who is leading the cfl by a wide margin in on… Read more »
If Marino hadn’t wrapped up and just left the field nothing would have happened. I’m his mind, it was probably redemption for Robertson. I’m sure riders knew what they were getting when they signed him as I’m sure they do their due diligence in talking to ex coaches before signing. As we have seen, he plays with a edge but this crossed the line and can’t be defended.
