DUNK

3DownNation CFL Insider Justin Dunk made his weekly appearance on The Rod Pedersen Show on Wednesday and offered the latest news on the league attempting to play a shortened 2020 season.

“Let me just preface this by saying the information that you and I and the other good people that cover the league is literally what we know, and it changes minute-by-minute, and daily,” Dunk began. “With that said, the latest that I’ve heard is that there’s optimism around the league. The chances, I believe, for football in 2020 have gone up and I will say that because the CFLPA and the league office have agreed on a number of the items on the COVID-19 CBA, let’s say.

“The major one is going to be money, which it always is. The players do want a guarantee that dollars will come their way if a season happens to be stopped or postponed, as it’s going, due to an outbreak. That’s the kicker right now. From what I’ve heard, they’re working away. The CFLPA at least wants the veterans to be guaranteed their salaries.

“I’ve also heard on the other side that the league has realized that ‘hey we’re gonna have guys come up and have to quarantine for potentially a week before they get on the field in Winnipeg’. Obviously they’ll have to do 14 days at home, but those players could be paid $1000 to do so. So there’s a lot of financial talks going on behind the scenes.”

Meanwhile TSN CFL Insider Dave Naylor reports the league’s run into a snag on players wanting to exercise NFL options during the CFL season postponement.

“Hearing there is unhappiness that CFL players cannot pursue NFL training camp opportunities because they remain under contract to their CFL teams,” Naylor Tweeted. “The argument is that a league which isn’t paying players shouldn’t be able to enforce contract exclusivity on them.”

There are rumblings we could have an update on the 2020 season from the CFL on, or before Friday.
