CHAMBLIN’S AIRPORT COMMENTS
Saskatchewan Roughriders head coach Corey Chamblin met reporters at the Regina Airport upon the team’s return from Edmonton and Friday’s 30-5 loss to the Eskimos which dropped their record to 0-6. Here are some of his quotes:
HOW DO YOU KEEP THE TEAM’S SPIRITS UP?
CC: That’s always tough, regardless of the situation. The guys that were in that room last night are the same guys that have been in the room. We’ll sit down and find ways to not only have a good fight but always come out with the win. That’s the toughest thing right now – you’re doing some things right and there are some things that are not being done right. With all the things that we’ve had go against us, we have to find ways to get out of it.
HOW MUCH OF THIS IS ON YOUR SHOULDERS?
CC: Being the head coach, that’s a part of it. It doesn’t matter how much I want to take or don’t want to take, being the head coach that’s what it is. The one thing I said I’d never do is start to point fingers which I never do. My job is to give this team hope. My job is to make sure that until it’s actually done, to keep life and keep pushing this team forward.
WHAT DO YOU NEED TO DO BETTER?
CC: I can’t throw the ball. I can’t run the ball. Like anything else, I think I can just keep the course with what I’m doing. Me doing something better, I’m not sure what a head coach could do better. I’m constantly analyzing myself, analyzing where I am. Doing better? I can’t give you that answer right now. If I could, I would do it.
WHAT ABOUT ALL THE ADVERSITY THE TEAM’S FACED?
CC: You guys understand that. You can see that. I’m never going to rely on an excuse. I’m not built that way. There’s reality and there’s excuses. The reality is we have had adversity. I think the good mark of any good football team and any good coach is fighting through the adversity and that’s what we’re doing.
WHY DID YOU PULL QB BRETT SMITH?
CC: That had nothing to do with Brett’s play at that point. That was just one of those things where I told Jacques, “Let’s see Tino”. That was not a negative towards Brett. I told Brett, “You’re not being pulled. I just want to see Tino at this point”. It was at the point where the game wasn’t going to be won. A lot of people asked why we didn’t leave Brett in to get those reps but we have to see what Tino has at this point also.
WHAT HAPPENED IN YOUR EXCHANGE WITH NIC DEMSKI?
CC: The one thing you’ll never see is me light into guys on the sideline. That’s very negative when you see that. I get after the guys enough, but I don’t like to do it on the sidelines. I might have been wrong for doing it to Nic but I didn’t light into Nic. The actual conversation was about me saying, “This is an opportunity for you to fight. Don’t have your head down”. That’s what I lit into him about, because he had his head down. I never want to see a player come off the field with his head down. I don’t care what the situation is — never give up. That’s what I got after is — don’t ever put your head down.
Chamblin's excuses have run out and the final result will happen Sunday afternoon or Monday morning. So long, see yuh !
To do a coaching change at this time of the year with the circumstances the way they are, I see no benefit unless of course there is a lot more to this as I suppose he has lost the room. This according to Garry Lawless of TSN….. http://www.tsn.ca/cfl/video/chamblin-s-days-with-the-riders-at-an-end~670256
Polkabill from the Peg
Well, let's out the Rider Executive who leaked this information to an outsider and lynch him also while we're at it.
CC"The one thing you'll never see is me light into guys on the sideline."
CC"I might have been wrong for doing it to Nic but I didn't light into Nic."
then
CC"That's what I lit into him about, because he had his head down"
So what was it, did you light into him or not?
I feel bad for Chamblin because the print media sharks & 2nd Tier radio guys have the pitchforks out and pounding the stake into the ground at Mosaic. The team is hurting but Chamblin doesn't deserve the level of venom hurled at him. His age is showing through and he's made some errors both on the field & in the context of his interviews that are adding to the stress. Its clear he feels he can't admit to them because again, the public perception detailed by the media hacks and the arm chair GM's on the blogs will simply add… Read more »
Well said.
While there's no doubt Chamblin has taken on too much and pissed off a lot of people, at the end of the day a coach can only do so much with the horses he's been given. Before everyone says injuries aren't preventable the fact is the older your team is the more injuries become an issue. That's on Taman. And who hired Taman, Jim Hopson. It's first and foremost on Jim for this debacle.
Rumours of CC getting canned from Lloydminster radio station I hope are just rumours. He's our best chance at fighting through this mess. Don't give up on him! We will pull out of this.
Dead man walking.
When CC says "I'm not sure what a head coach could do better" is the answer of a guy who is in trouble. When any of us are asked that same question, we know ourselves what we can do better. If CC does not know how he is to improve then how is he supposed to improve. I am NOT advocating for a coaching change in mid-season that does not work. However, there needs to be a serious review of the entire football operations at the end of the year. From the GM to coaches to scouting it all needs… Read more »
Who cares what Chamblin even has to say at this point. Love it.
Man i used to be a huge chamblin fan. But i guess tough times truely measure a mans character.
No doubt that the Riders would be at or above .500 save for the fact that injuries robbed our coach of Durant, then Glenn, Emery and Brown and an ongoing cast of others- key players on the D and O. Another coach won't provide what the team lacks due to injuries. Its all about 2016 now.
Would YOU want to coach the Riders with the type of fans in this province…would anyone? "We're with you win or tie!"
2nd tier radio guys. Why are you being so kind to those clowns?
The Rider Executive who is buds with Winnipeg's Lawless needs to have his position terminated asap.
My Dad says he has a source who told him on Saturday that Paul Lapolice will be coming in very soon as the new head coach and will appoint Mike Benevides as his Defensive Co-ordinator.
the guy that should be fired is the guy that call himself the GM not CC
the guy that should be fired is the guy that call himself the GM not CC
the guy that should be fired is the guy who is the GM not CC you trade away our first around draft picks a get older guys does work in this league also why are we getting the most penta lies it's because of are age of the team
It was/is Chamblin's ego/arrogance/defiance that got him into this situation. A more humble man taking and admitting accountability for the error of his ways following the first 3 losses would have received more respect and tolerance and optimism for positive changes being on the way.
I really feel for the coach. He has made some mistakes, etc., but does not deserve the level of criticism that he is getting. Unfortunately, when a team is struggling it can get ugly fast.
I feel Taman needs to act quickly here and either support his coach or fire him as the rumours suggest. Really poorly done by the organization.
