Commentary: A Wing Thing

(Listen daily for the RP Commentary on the All New Hits 98 CKHD & LTD Radio)
It’s Tuesday and time for the Good, the Great & the Ugly!
First the good: TSN’s Craig Button is saying the NHL debut of Montreal Canadiens rookie Ivan Demidov could not have gone better. The 5th overall pick in last year’s draft had a goal and an assist in Montreal’s 4-3 shootout loss to Chicago on Monday. He’s just the second Hab to record multiple points in his franchise debut (Petr Svoboda was the other in 1984).
But Montreal failed to clinch a playoff berth and will try again in their final game Wednesday versus Carolina. Talk about a good news/bad news story!
Next the great: The Weyburn Red Wings are off to the SJHL Final for the first time since 2012. They knocked off Flin Flon in overtime Monday night to take that S-J semifinal in six games and will now face defending champion Melfort in the Canterra Seeds Final.
Weyburn hasn’t won the league since 2001. This is bringing back memories of my Wings fandom in the 80’s, watching John Corrigan in net, Spencer and Amiotte up front, and listening to Trev Bell call it all on CFSL.
Close friend Daniel Wapple coaches the goalies for Weyburn and told me back in the fall that, “We’re a wagon!” Turns out he was right.
I guess all it took to revive Red Wing Fever in the Opportunity City is for the team to win.
Who knew?
And finally, the ugly: Some of the things that immediately came to mind are actually too ugly to mention here. I don’t want to get your day off on the wrong foot!
Let’s keep it within the white lines and simply say the Blue Jays kicking off their homestand with an 8-4 loss to the Atlanta Braves was pretty ugly!
Vladdy & Bo went a combined 0/8 at the plate and promising young pitcher Easton Lucas gave up six hits and eight runs in five innings on the mound.
One of the most beautiful things about baseball is that they get another crack at ‘em tonight.
That’s today’s Rod Pedersen Commentary.
