Commentary: Anything Can Happen

A coupla three or so thoughts heading into the weekend:

#1 – The CFL had been motoring along pretty good. No scandals to speak of for quite some time.

Then last night happened.

Rider Nation is howling today, over what occurred in Saskatchewan’s 22-22 overtime tie at Ottawa.

See, the Riders thought they’d won the game after recovering a fumble in the second OT but the Command Centre (video review office in CFL HQ) voluntarily reviewed the play, gave Ottawa the ball back, and allowed them to kick the game-tying, and game-ending field goal. The coaches had already shook hands and some players were already in the locker room.

Cue the outrage.

But to me, the Riders were lucky to even get a point. That same Command Centre overturned a call on the field in the first overtime which gave the Riders a first down, rather than a turnover on downs which, would’ve ended the game and gave Ottawa the win.

Just my two cents.

#2 – That game marked the end of the first half of the Riders season. They are now 5-3-1. What’s interesting is had they won – which they almost did – their record would’ve been 6-3 and that would’ve been the team’s best nine game mark in 10 years.

But they didn’t win.

#3 – We’ll delve into it more on the RP Show today but last night’s game-ending hijinx left lots of folks clamouring for the NFL. At least, that’s what I saw on social media.

They say it’s a much more professional league but in truth, I could see the same set of events happening in the 4-down league too.

But the NFL is awesome. It featured two preseason games last night and there are three more on tap tonight.

The games aren’t nearly as exciting as the CFL – especially right now – but people are gonna think what they wanna think, and this controversy can’t be good for the CFL’s image.

And #4 – The unthinkable happened last night and the Moose Jaw Miller Express swept out the Regina Red Sox in the WCBL playoffs, with a series-clinching 7-6 victory at a jam-packed Ross Wells Ball Park.

Regina had won seven of eight meetings in the regular season.

More evidence that, in the playoffs anything can happen.

That’s today’s Rod Pedersen Commentary.

1. Here’s the difference: Mace threw a challenge flag, as he is entitled to. Ottawa benefitted from the Command Centre INSERTING themselves into the play. Even the Redblacks thought they had lost

HUGE difference
