Commentary: Be All You Can Be

(Listen daily for the RP Commentary on the All New Hits 98 CKHD & LTD Radio)

A coupla three or more thoughts entering the weekend:

#1 – The nation’s sports fans are mourning the loss of famed TSN sportscaster Darren Dutchyshen. The Porcupine Plain, SK product passed away Wednesday from cancer at 57.

I knew him well and can tell you with Dutchy, what you saw was what you got. No one in North America hosted more Sportscentres than him; TSN or ESPN.

‘Nuff said.

#2 – Not sure why but the football note that’s resonating with me the most is the furor Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker has caused for telling girls during a school commencement speech that they should be most excited about getting married and having kids.

Hey folks – it’s not a crime to be stupid, narrowminded or even old-fashioned. If it was, we’d need jails the size of Commonwealth Stadium.

As for girls, you can be whatever you want to be.

#3 – Just a reminder, do not follow me for betting advice.

My Stanley Cup bracket is out the window after Carolina bowed out Thursday night in Game 6 against the New York Rangers.

I had Dallas beating Carolina in the Final.

I had a notion too that Edmonton might meet Toronto in the first all-Canadian Stanley Cup Final since 1989 but the Leafs proved to be who we thought they were, and now the Oilers are on the brink after losing Game 5 to the Vancouver Canucks Thursday night.

But hey – why are we surprised that we’re surprised?

We knew these Stanley Cup Playoffs featured 16 great teams and some great teams were going to bite the dust each round.

It’s not like College Football where everybody knows who’s going to win each week and oddly enough, the Americans are fine with that.

I’d rather have this.

I’m guessing Mike Stackhouse owns a Harrison Butker jersey now. Two peas in a disturbing pod.

Harrison Butker is an American Hero

Harrison Butker’s comments would resonate more if they weren’t delivered in such a mean spirited way. But that is the state of social and political discourse in North America, people are more interested in lashing out and attacking those who disagree with them than they are in any meaningful dialogue and mutual understanding.

They resonated with me. He told the truth. The truth hurts. It also never apologizes, explains or answers questions.

Politics is their new religion out there and that’s just been the history of human kind.

Harrison spoke truth to power and trust me those little gals are going to be heeding those words in about 20 years when the eggs start drying up.

Great stuff as always #1 – We don’t know what we have until it’s gone. Dutch would have been and amazing CKRM guy when we had the Murderer’s Row of who’s who to listen to with Rod leading the Whack Pack. He had a big affiliation with Hugh Campbell and Edmonton. Where I cemeneted this guy into eternity as the best TSN had to offer: Then/Now/Always They were yapping about great NFL teams this and that. Darren looks in the camera: “There’s only 1 football team.” – and he was giving nod to the Roughriders. Godspeeed and rest well. The… Read more »
