Commentary: Bravo Flames

It’s Tuesday and you know what that means – it’s time for the Good, the Great & the Ugly!

First the good: After spending a week in Alberta, one thing is crystal clear. We have A LOT of viewers in Wild Rose Country for the RP Show.

And having mingled with the hockey people out there, it’s also clear that they’re 100% on board with the Calgary Flames rebuild (even though the Flames refuse to call it that).

Theo Fleury even said look how exciting the Blue Jays are after they scrapped this season and started over! There’s something exciting about seeing what the kids can do, and admitting the window with the older guys has closed.

Plus construction is well underway on the new arena, and there’s more optimistic and positivity in Cowtown than there’s been in decades. At least, among the hockey people, and they’re the ones who know the score.

It takes balls to look in the mirror and say, “This isn’t working. Let’s try something new.”

Next the great: There are so many great things going on in sports that it’s hard to narrow down just one!

But to be honest, it’s the fact the NFL regular season is right around the corner.

In fact the preseason is proving to be very tantalizing as well, whatwith stellar play from rookie quarterbacks Caleb Williams, Jayden Daniels and Bo Nix, and veteran Gardner Minshew winning the starting job in Vegas.

There’s going to be a lot of NFL talk here this fall because, if it hasn’t already, the NFL’s becoming the most-popular football league in Canada.

And finally the ugly: I’ve been covering the CFL since 1991 and I can’t recall as touchy of a story as Argonauts quarterback Chad Kelly.

I think we all know he was suspended nine games for his role in a sexual harassment claim by a former Argos staffer and now he’s set to return to the field this Thursday.

Wouldn’t you know it – it’s against the Saskatchewan Roughriders on Thursday at BMO Field.

Will fans boo him or not?

The only thing I know for certain is this: We’ll all be watching.
