COMMENTARY: DON’T PULL A MIAMI

Sometimes it’s difficult to separate the kooks from the straights.

Especially these days, when anybody can get a social media account and folks of our generation tend to believe what we see in black & white.

I’m not sure if that’ll ever change.

But I’m hearing a lot from Winnipeg Jets fans these days. And why not? Their team is #1 overall in the NHL, and the winners of six in a row following their 6-2 triumph over the Arizona Coyotes Sunday night.

Statistically, they’re by far the best Jets team ever (formerly the Atlanta Thrashers, remember) and have gone 29 straight games of allowing three goals or less against. That’s a club record, as is their current 12-game point streak.

That should be enough, right?

But no. Because our TV show booms into Winnipeg on Bell MTS cable and Shaw/Rogers, we have a lot of Jets fans who watch. And because of the gashing of mainstream media on the prairies, even more Jets fans are following my online columns and social media channels.

Lately they wanna know why they’re not getting more credit from yours truly? After all, they’re the #1 team in the NHL, and having a franchise best season! “Why do you keep talking about the Oilers or the Panthers?”

I’m sorry, but I never really thought about it. I watch the games and have given credit where it’s due, but last time I checked, they don’t hand out the Stanley Cup in January.

If they’re following our shows and commentary, they’ll know I had a gut-full of bravado from the Miami Dolphins all season. They set all kinds of offensive records this year and were having their best season in 20 years.

But then they crippled down the stretch, lost 21-14 to the Bills in the regular season finale Sunday night, and now have to go on the road as the 6th seed to face the vaunted Chiefs in Kansas City next weekend.

The moral of the story?

Don’t celebrate at the 1-yard line. Shoot, some Jets fans are celebrating at the 50-yard line!

But they don’t speak for everyone.

That’s today’s Rod Pedersen Commentary

Two very “long drawn out” wasteful sports management plans at the professional level leaving their fanbase disappointed each year;

1-Toronto Maple Leafs/Brendan Shanahan.

2-Winnipeg Jet/Kevin Cheveldayoff.
