A coupla three or more thoughts entering the weekend:

#1 – As expected, the Dallas Cowboys snapped a two-game slide with a 20-15 win over the New York Giants Thursday night. I’m told the mood was one of relief in the Cowboys locker room after the game.

At least the Giants beat the spread of six points? I’ve never really understood that. Having a winning record against the spread (ATS) doesn’t get a team into the playoffs.

#2 – I’ve spent a lot of the week being flabbergasted. WNBA players are up in arms over negative comments from their fans – both racist and homophobic – during these womens basketball playoffs. The league issued a statement in support of their players.

Let me get this straight: the players say they appreciate the sellouts, TV ratings bonanza, and increased media coverage but want all of their millions of new fans to all be nice?

Let me know how that goes.

Now you know what your counterparts have been dealing with for over a century.

The League would be far better off by offering Mental Health support to their players, rather than issuing statements. But for some reason, that’s taboo. Instead let’s allow the players to suffer, and complain in the media.

I don’t get it.

#3 – Since the day I showed up here four seasons ago, Florida hockey types and fans have been groaning that they’re not taken seriously as a hockey market. Then on Wednesday when the Lightning faced the Panthers in Orlando in the preseason, we were told they weren’t keeping track of the shots on goal. Also, they didn’t announce the attendance either.

Again, flabbergasted.

You can’t complain if you’re not going to help yourself.

And #4 – While on the phone with one of my football insiders this week – now retired living in the U.S. South – he said, “I worry for the CFL when I see all the empty seats on TV.”

I advised that if the CFL survived Covid, they can survive anything.

Besides, they’re not worried about us.

That’s today’s Rod Pedersen Commentary.
