COMMENTARY – FISH WHERE THE FISH ARE (OR ALLIGATORS)

(Listen daily for the RP Commentary on Cat Country 98, Rock 98.5 FM & LTD Radio)

Taking you into the weekend with a coupla three or more thoughts …

#1 – The World Series begins tonight and I heard on the radio the other day that the Texas Rangers have never won it. That was enough to get me tuned in! Texas is home to Arizona in Game 1 Friday night.

I’ve often wondered if the leagues and teams realize how much the media sells their product for them for free. That radio host sold me.

#2 – It’s a weekend of meaningless games in the CFL before the playoffs begin next week. We’ve tried our best to whip up interest in the CFL across the country but the analytics show the majority are simply interested in the Roughriders and with them out of the playoffs, that’s not good for anyone.

And as far as our coverage goes, as my business guy says: “Fish where the fish are.”

In a lot of ways it’s why ESPN talks about the Dallas Cowboys every. single. day. The majority rules.

#3 – That means the Saskatchewan Roughriders coaching search is top-of-mind. While we clearly can’t all agree on who’s responsible for the Roughriders being in the mess they’re in, there’s one thing we can all agree on:

This next hire of the Roughriders head coach is a critical one for the franchise.

While the pundits seem to think Scott Milanovich should be the guy because he’s got the best resume, I completely disagree.

Henry Burris is the clear choice. He’s also got the resume, but he’s got the fire, and he knows what the province is all about. It’s a special place and Hank’s a special guy.

In my mind, for Scott Milanovich, this would be just another job. For Henry it would be a passion project. And as John Frenzy would say about Burris, “He’s a winner all the way!”

And #4 – Interesting times in the NHL’s Bermuda Triangle. The Jets are winning and the owner says he won’t move the team no matter what. (What else is he going to say?) Therefore Winnipeg hockey fans should be very happy these days.

Meanwhile in Alberta, the Oilers and Flames are the biggest disappointments in the NHL so far this season. I know now that telling people we’re not even 10 games into the season is a waste of breath. They’d rather panic.

As for me, the State of Florida has some of the most unique landscape in all of the world.

Time to go explore some more of it this weekend.
