Today’s commentary comes to you from Miami International Airport; heading to Las Vegas for Super Bowl LVIII festivities. Some random thoughts on this Wednesday:

Almost everyone is excited these days.

Almost.

Had the Edmonton Oilers been able to win Tuesday night at Vegas, sports fans in our vortex would barely be able to contain themselves because it would’ve meant an NHL record-tying 17th straight win.

But alas, they did not. Former Regina Pat Chandler Stephenson scored the game-winner and the Golden Knights threw water on the Oilers’ parade, winning 3-1 in the Fortress.

From an Oilers perspective, it’s simply time to start another streak. No shame in losing to the Golden Knights.

From a Vegas perspective, T-Mobile Arena was filled to the brim with the usual Knights fans, plus exuberant football fans whom are in Sin City early for Super Bowl.

I’ll admit to a certain amount of FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out), but I’ve spent nine years in Recovery having the concept of “moderation” pounded into my cranium through daily training.

I thought a little bit of Super Bowl would be enough but when it comes to the NFL, nothing is ever enough.

Next year, I guess, we’ll go to New Orleans for the entire week. But for now, I’m pretty happy with five days and will just be happy to get there.

Oh – and about people being excited. Flames fans are jumping up and down that newcomer Andrei Kuzmenko opened the scoring in his Flames debut; a 4-1 win at Boston while Elias Lindholm – Kuzmenko’s trade counterpart – struck twice for Vancouver as they won 3-2 at Carolina.

And Rider fans are excited too. In this pre-Free Agency period the team has lured away some big names: tackle Jermarcus Hardrick from Winnipeg and tailback A.J. Ouellette from Toronto.

So many Rider Priders have asked for my opinion on the additions and here’s a snippet: in a 9-team league everybody’s got a shot at the Grey Cup and bravo to the Green & White for taking steps to get better.

However as of today they’re not a favourite, nor dare I say even a contender, for reasons we don’t have time to get into here. That’s what the months ahead are for.

But for now, go ahead and celebrate!

That’s today’s Rod Pedersen Commentary

Too much money doled out on Jurmarcus Hardrick, too much. Thurman plus Ouellette strong Rider team signings which is good. The less than mediocre almost pedestrian Morrow gone, good. Hickson & Ouellette, Alford will be a force with Roughriders run game.

Considering that a decade ago, we shelved out $200,000 each for LaBatte and Picard, Hardrick’s a bargain.
