COMMENTARY: GREATEST SHOW ON EARTH?

(Listen daily for the RP Commentary on the All New Hits 98 CKHD & LTD Radio)

With all due apologies to the Calgary Stampede, I think the Super Bowl could lay claim to the title, “Greatest Show On Earth”.

Super Bowl 58 festivities here in Las Vegas are well underway as we work our way towards Sunday’s NFL championship game between Kansas City and San Francisco.

I’ve been asked a hundred times and the answer’s still the same; I’m taking the Chiefs to win despite the fact the 49ers have been favoured by two points for almost two weeks. I still can’t figure out why KC isn’t favoured.

But, similar to all the other championship weekends I’ve been fortunate to cover like Grey Cups, Memorial Cups, Centennial Cups, Briers, Scotties & the like, the talk of the game at this point is secondary.

What’s going on on, and around, the Vegas Strip can be described as nothing short of sheer madness.

Outlandish costumes, boorish behaviour, hook-ups, but also revelry among NFL fans from around the world is what can be seen in the casinos and in the clubs.

And of course betting on anything that has hair and a heartbeat.

It was pretty crazy on Thursday at Radio Row alone, where were were broadcasting the RP Show from live and will again on Friday.

My scheduled guests all showed up, but largely out of order, and it became an exercise in juggling a hot potato on national television and local radio.

Then Denver Broncos linebacker and CFL great Alex Singleton came up and gave me a solid punch in the arm on-camera. Famed coach Jeff Reinebold tried to scare the daylights out of me.

Add to that NFL stars Kurt Warner, Emmitt Smith, Josh Allen, Ja’marr Chase, Ricky Williams and Donovan McNabb milling about, and you’ve got the greatest show on earth.

At least, that’s if you love football.

And this weekend it feels like everybody does.

That’s today’s Rod Pedersen Commentary
