It’s Tuesday and that means it’s time for the Good, the Great & the Ugly!

First the good: No flower blooms year ‘round. If you noticed, the NFL is taking a breather since Super Bowl with nary a headline to be had.

(Save for Jimmy Garoppolo’s 2-game suspension for a positive PED test. The jokes write themselves there!)

Take advantage of the breather! And when someone tells you the NFL is a 12-month league, you can point to this spell as proof they actually are not.

Next the great: President’s Day in the US and Family Day across most of Canada could just as aptly be named “Hockey Day In North America”.

On Monday there were 10 games in the NHL, nine in the WHL and three in the SJHL!

The remote control got a workout – if you’re so inclined – and that’s all kinds of great.

And lastly the ugly: My social media timelines were jammed with commentary on Saskatchewan’s Skylar Ackerman jumping out to a 3-0 start at the Scotties in Calgary.

It was a remarkable achievement and it had us scrambling to see when was the last time a rookie team won the Canadian Womens Curling Championship? (It’s been 34 years).

But the Scotties draw is a harsh old nag and a pair of Monday losses brought the Saskatoon foursome (by way of Moose Jaw) crashing back to earth.

Meanwhile Jennifer Jones is remarkably in her 18th Scotties and still keeps chugging along at the top of her pool, at 4-0.

There’s something to be said for experience and J-J has it.

Ackerman’s rink just needs to take their lumps to earn their stripes, no matter how ugly they are.

That’s today’s Rod Pedersen Commentary

I have to say Skylar Ackermans Sask team at the Scotties is way over rated. I have watched the past 2 games of theirs and they are a B team playing with the top teams in Canada. The front end is weak at sweeping as there has been lots of situations where a good front end could have held rocks on its line. The 3rd is not a shot maker and makes way too many mistakes. Ackerman herself makes so many poor shot call decisions that it is a wonder they even won their first 3 games. Plus her shot… Read more »

They may not be the best team there, but from every shot they are gaining experience. They are “kids” compared to me and are doing the best they can. Would rather see them then some 60 plus Sherri Anderson.

Don’t be knocking Saskatchewan’s very own Sherri Anderson.

Would never knock her!
She did well for Sk, but it’s time for the youth to build curling now.
I only used her as an example.
Am happy Jones is hanging it up though.

It is an embarrassment that this team is the best Sask has to offer. Like I said, this is a B team playing against professionals. Ackerman’s % agsinst Team Canada this afternoon was at 60%. Terrible!!!!
