Hail the Warriors!

For the first time in history, today we can say the Moose Jaw Warriors are Western Hockey League champions.

The Tribe finished off a sweep of the Portland Winterhawks Wednesday night with a 4-2 victory in the Moose Jaw Events Centre before a crowd that was going out of their minds.

So many thoughts are bouncing around my head with this historic news, but the primary one is a hearty congratulations to the Warriors organization and the City of Moose Jaw!

They pulled this off in their 40th season. Remarkable!

Many inside, and outside, that city wondered and doubted if this day would ever come.

Secondly, as I watch highlights and look at photos from the series and specifically Game 4, I marvelled that the Warriors finally have a team that matches their spectacular arena.

Although, it’s not like they’ve been basement-dwellers. Last decade, only the Brandon Wheat Kings won more games than Moose Jaw. Can you imagine them playing this series in that dump of a Crushed Can?

Regardless, now they’re the kings of the castle.

Thirdly, no, I’m not excited as the lifelong Warrior fans – how could anyone be? – but I definitely am standing and giving applause.

In Moose Jaw the diehards refer to me as “the Pats guy” even though I haven’t had much to do with the Pats for a lonnnnnnnng time.

But I am a hockey guy, and everyone in the game has noticed what the Band City has done this spring.

Next up, the Memorial Cup.

Oh, and Saskatoon … you’re on the clock.

That’s today’s Rod Pedersen Commentary

As a Pats fan/supporter. I have crapped on moose jaw for decades and rightfully so. Those associated with that team’s chapter in the 1980s have reserved parking in hell. With that said “class” changes everything. Does anyone remember the hey day of the Kamloops Blazers and Vancouver Giants? Two Regina guys were right here in the yard and Jason & Todd know a thing or two about winning hockey championships. When they get the Memorial Cup. Toronto Maple Leafs should be on notice to give those two a phone call. The fact Moose Jaw got there before Regina…..tells you all… Read more »
