It’s Wednesday and that means it’s “Random Thoughts Day” on this commentary:

#1 – It’s nice to be able to pick up the phone, call a hockey mentor you’ve trusted for over 30 years, and know you’ll get the straight goods with no BS.

That’s what I did Tuesday to get to the bottom of the Junior A chaos that saw five Alberta teams announce they’re defecting to the rival BC-Hockey League beginning next season.

This guy said a lot of it is P.R., but a lot of it is junior teams who feel Hockey Canada bylaws are too restrictive and wanted to forge their own path.

He doesn’t like it, but said so far it’s worked out for BC. He also doesn’t expect Hockey Canada to change its rules.

So here we are.

#2 – Pretty good news, I’d say, that the Roughriders signed veteran quarterback Mason Fine to a contract extension on Tuesday. He didn’t necessarily light it up when QB1 Trevor Harris went down last year, but he gave the team a chance.

More than anything, you want to retain your players; especially if they’re quality people, which I’m told Fine is.

The fact that he wants to be part of turning this franchise around is admirable. It’s tough to find quarterbacks who can start.

#3 – The Oilers keep winning and the Flames keep losing. The fortunes of Alberta’s hockey teams are as different as night and day. It’s been fun to follow and as elated as I am for Oiler fans with their 14thstraight victory coming Tuesday night, I really feel for fans of the Flames.

The winning goal for St. Louis in a 4-3 victory came on a 50-foot wristshot that beat Jacob Markstrom.

There’s not much left to say anymore, and I’m beginning to wonder if Regina’s Murray Edwards selling the team would even make a difference.

But as far as whether they should go into a rebuild or not? That decision is making itself .

That’s today’s Rod Pedersen Commentary

Mason Fine proved last year he is not capable. Nice guys finish last. Harris is old and this is our quarterback depth? Yikes!
