COMMENTARY: HOCKEY STORIES

Paul McCartney sang about it – that people are the same wherever you go.

The same holds true for hockey players.

I put the call out to Florida Panthers fans: Who would they like to see the most on our Cats ‘N Bolts Podcast, which covers Florida NHL hockey weekly?

The answer was resounding — 6’7” famed and feared fighter Peter Worrell. (1997-2004)

I always like a challenge and this was one. To be honest it had been pretty easy getting Ed Jovanovski, Bill Lindsay, Jeff Chychryn and the like on the show. They’re all Panthers broadcasters, and I see them all the time.

Worrell however, proved to be a lot harder to track down. But he does work for the Panthers as brand ambassador and youth hockey director and after getting those other guys to twist his arm a little, Worrell showed up at our Boca Raton studios on Wednesday.

And man was it ever a treat! Over a 40-minute chat, the Montreal product discussed playing in Memorial Cups in Kamloops and Hull in his junior career, performing the role of fighter during his 391-game NHL career (Tony Twist was the toughest guy he ever fought), being the subject of racial taunts on the road in junior and pro, and the effort to get more youth playing hockey in South Florida whether it be on the ice or on the floor.

It took Peter a little bit to warm up – a sure sign that he’s been burned in the past – but like all the rest, his hesitation turned into a warm smile and the interview went longer than originally planned.

He kept apologizing for rambling but I assured him we had all the time in the world, and this show is a safe place.

Ebony & Ivory indeed.

That’s today’s Rod Pedersen Commentary

Very interesting, thank you. I suspect that guests soon find out you are not out to get them!

I’d encourage people to watch/listen to a couple of podcasts. Joe Rogan is a given as he’s one to listen. Theo Vonn’s podcast/youtube channel This Past Weekend – Theo is a 42 year old comedian/commentator that has been through the $hi!. The MMA Fighter Sean Strickland talks as an aside about his trauma and out of nowhere has a breakdown – Theo is such an empath he was tearing up before it happened because he knew where it was going. To say, “That’s okay we don’t have to talk I’ll just sit here with you” The real deals that have… Read more »
