Commentary: Life’s Too Short

(Listen daily for the RP Commentary on the All New Hits 98 CKHD & LTD Radio)
It’s Tuesday and time for the Good, the Great & the Ugly:
First the good – Not sure what the TV ratings will reflect, but Monday night’s MLB All Star Homerun Derby in Atlanta was a smashing success. 42,000 fans were on hand and Seattle’s Cal Raleigh became the first Mariner to win it since Ken Griffey Jr.
Frankly I never stopped to think about the fact Aaron Judge and Shohei Ohtani weren’t in it; the true homerun specialists. I just enjoyed watching the prowess of those who were, and looking up their backgrounds like the one of Pirates star Oneil Cruz.
Some people just like to complain.
Next the great: Half the NFL teams’ training camps will open this week with rookies reporting while the other half will go next week. We discussed the staggering of camps opening with football pundits on the RP Show on Monday and the conclusion was that having all 32 teams open camp on the same day would cause media overload.
What a problem to have! But it seems like as good a reason as any.
Can’t wait.
And finally the ugly: Unfortunately there’s plenty to choose from – like the 16.2 QB rating of Edmonton’s Tre Ford on Sunday – but I’ve gotta go with the latest squabbles of Ron & Don.
Hockey Night In Canada’s Ron McLean told a Kingston newspaper last week that Don Cherry was in failing health back in 2019 and he “crafted” his exit from Coach’s Corner.
Grapes responded on the weekend, saying that’s simply not true and wonders why McLean is bringing up the past at all.
It’s ugly that the most famed and successful Canadian TV duo in history has seen their relationship deteriorate to this point and at age 91, I can’t see Cherry being interested in mending fences now.
It just makes me grateful that a huge rift I had in my life got patched up this summer and we’re making up for lost time. I won’t name the other person out of respect for their privacy but it sure feels good to straighten things out, and move on. Life’s too short.
And time doesn’t heal all wounds. People do.

When were give people enough time. They will show who they are. Believe them the first time. I do not take sides in the Ron & Don show. What I will say is it is not a surprise. Ron McLean works for the CBC. They deposit an agreed amount of $ every two weeks. They start again on Monday. From my vantage point I watched a very weak man within a public sector organization. Ron had a job to set it up so Don could knock ’em down. In doing so he took jabs, slights, comments to the point Rose… Read more »
Ron McLean started life as a ‘good guy’. But 35 years in Eastern Canada changes that.
Nobody is a “good guy”. To be clear. I am not defending him. If I had my druthers George Stromboulopolous would have remained and over time he’d have gotten over as he did on any show he’s been on. If anything he’d make “woke” seem normal. CBC as evidenced in the election has an agenda and Eastern/Southern Ontario Boomers like what they like. For every Don fan believe me there are probably two Ron fans because he’s just like a comfortable pair of shoes. Ron McLean had a job which did not just apply to the 1st period segment. That… Read more »
