Commentary: Living Up To The Hype

Back from “vacation” and boy it feels good! Here are some Monday thoughts as we get back in the swing of things:

#1 – Our baseball season ended Saturday night in Okotoks as the Moose Jaw Miller Express lost 6-5 to the host Dawgs in Game 3 of the Best-of-3 WCBL championship. The Dawgs broke a 5-5 tie in the bottom of the ninth with a walk-off homer. Painful! 

As someone said, “It’s as close to winning a championship as you could get, without winning one.”

Man, I thought I was done with those.

It was painful, and I really feel for the kids. Losses like that stay with you forever.

But on the plus side, my first season in baseball was A-M-A-Z-I-N-G! It provided much more than expected including new friendships with people all across Canada and the US.

So it was a win.

I’ve verbally committed to returning to the Millers in 2025, but not guaranteed it. I’d like to for sure, but have no idea what’ll happen in a year!

#2 – We’re keeping close tabs on the CFL and boy is there a lot going on there! Nathan Rourke struggled in his return to BC – losing 20-11 Sunday night to Winnipeg – but he’s going to be just fine. But it was quite a lesson in living up to the hype.

Meanwhile the Roughriders still sit in first place with a record of 5-4-1. But after going 4-0 to start the season, they’re 1-4-1 since. (That’s one win in six games). Their record feels like a mirage.

Kicker Brett Lauther missed four field goals in Friday’s 3-point loss to Montreal and took the blame afterwards.

If the Riders are a family like they say they are, they won’t kick out a family member after one bad day at the office. Especially one as proven as Brett.

And I don’t think they will.

And #3 – Today’s the day we’re supposed to find out what the Edmonton Oilers will do after young stars Philip Broberg and Dylan Holloway were tendered offer sheets by the St. Louis Blues last week. (i.e. an attempt to steal them away).

Will they match one, both, or neither?

The Oilers have been busy moving pieces around since but my guess is they’ll match Broberg, but not Holloway.

We’ll know soon!

But I don’t really like this offer sheet process at all. It penalizes teams with great scouting and personnel departments and the Oilers don’t deserve this. Welcome to the job Stan Bowman!
