Commentary: March Madness

(Listen daily for the RP Commentary on the All New Hits 98 CKHD & LTD Radio)
If Fall is for football – which it is – then I think we can all agree that spring is for hockey.
The NHL races are red-hot and we talk about that almost everyday here.
But the passion in the junior and midget ranks is unmatched and has been fun to watch (sorry/not sorry, but it’ll always be “midget” to me. Sue me).
My NHL friends have long marveled that I love Junior A just as much as major junior, but that’s a no-brainer. That’s because they’re both amazing.
What caught my eye out of the SJHL-loop over the weekend is that the regular season has wrapped up, the first round playoff pairings are set, and unfortunately my Estevan Bruins are nowhere to be found.
Big changes coming in the Energy City. Or should I say, more changes.
And the Notre Dame Junior A Hounds played their final game ever in Wilcox Sunday night – a 4-2 loss to Melfort – and Hounds history was honored by league and local dignitaries. It woulda been fun to be there.
And since the Pats and Warriors are simply playing out the string in the Dub, Queen City hockey fans have turned their attention to the Triple-A Pat Canadians, who are a win away from the provincial final. (Looks like they’ll line up against Swift Current).
Longtime fans, help me: this is the third time in my memory where the Pat C’s could go on a much longer run than their parent club?
Every dog has their day, they say.
Of course our TV and phone screens are lit up with the NCAA’s March Madness these days and TSN & ESPN will have you believe that’s the biggest thing going on right now.
RP Show viewers tell me they’re into it, so I’ll be keeping an eye on it for sure. It doesn’t hurt to have the local FAU Owls primed for another run.
But we’ve had our own March Madness for quite some time.
It’s called: hockey playoffs.
That’s today’s Rod Pedersen Commentary.
