COMMENTARY: MORE MONEY THAN BRAINS
(Listen daily for the RP Commentary on the All New Hits 98 CKHD & LTD Radio)
A coupla three or so thoughts headed into the weekend:
#1 – Whether you plan to tune into this weekend’s NHL All Star Festivities in Toronto or not, it doesn’t matter. Millions will no matter what.
From last night’s Draft on the floor of Scotiabank Arena – admittedly corny with embarrassing sound system problems – to tonight’s Skills Competition and Saturday’s tournament, it’s all about the marketing and getting the players’ faces on TV.
The CFL and WHL are missing the boat by not having really any type of these activities, and we used to.
In 1998 we filled the Agridome for the WHL All Star Skills Event & Game. I remember it well because the players ribbed me for wearing goalie skates while MC’ing the event on ice.
That didn’t bother me.
#2 – Speaking of being ribbed, I was with some NHL people this week who teased me for the amount of CFL talk on the RP Show.
That didn’t bother me either. My 20 years in the CFL gave me a lot and CFL fans are a huge part of our audience. Plus I love the league.
If you don’t like it, don’t watch! But clearly they’re watching.
#3 – I’m following with interest the story of the pallet of never-opened O-Pee-Chee hockey cards discovered in Regina, reportedly worth millions.
I had a similar haul back in the day but when I left the farm in Milestone for college, my Mom tossed all the cards out. There was at least one Gretzky rookie card in there. Lemieux too.
But hey – I didn’t blame her. If stuff sat around for more than a week, she was taking it to the dump. We knew the policy, and I was just asleep at the switch.
And finally #4 – Ticket prices for Super Bowl 58 in Las Vegas next week are hitting an average of $10,000. I’m sorry, but there’s no game worth that. Who are these people?
As my Mom would say, they’re people with more money than brains.
That’s today’s Rod Pedersen Commentary
(The Rod Pedersen Show airs daily at 12 pm & 5 pm on Game+TV, WQEE Radio, Podcast & YouTube Live)
Re: Super Bowl tickets. One of the things that amazes me about the US is the sheer number of people who may not be RICH RICH like on a Jeff Bezos level, but are still making between 250K-1 million a year working for whatever corporation. There are just so many of these types of people who are willing to splurge on a once in a lifetime Super Bowl experience.
They don’t write your bank statement on your headstone.
Yes they do
