COMMENTARY: OOPS … THEY DID IT AGAIN

(Listen daily for the RP Commentary on the All New Hits 98 CKHD & LTD Radio)

Nothing more than random thoughts on today’s commentary:

#1 – I opened my phone today to see the Saskatchewan Roughriders are national news for having to apologize for a failed marketing campaign regarding “Girl Math”.

My first thought? At least 20 years ago when the team was bad on the field, at least the marketing department was winning awards off of it. (Remember ‘Canada’s Team’ and the Melonhead campaign?  Or “It’s Better In The Stands” and Be A Football Hero?)

Check the receipts. The team largely sucked back then! Yet the ad campaigns are iconic. Take a bow Trent Fraser.

These days the team’s apologizing for both its on-field, and off-field, mishaps.

Oy vey.

#2 – I was going to save this for my weekend column but decided to drop it here instead: It dawned on me, with the Flames on a four-game winning streak and their fans wondering why we don’t talk about them more, why you only hear from Flames fans when they’re winning! When they’re losing, I have to do a welfare check on them.

But up in Edmonton, you only hear from Oiler fans when they’re losing! (i.e. “Fire the Coach!”, “Fire the GM!” or “Our goaltending sucks!). Yet when they’re winning, you don’t hear a peep.

I’m not sure which is better or worse!

#3 – The NFL Combine is in Indianapolis this weekend, I guess, because there’s been tons of noise out of the league not related to the Combine. It’s fantastic.

And that dawned on me too – it’s not about the Underwear Olympics on the field. The Combine is valuable for the NFL because it gets the league together and the latest news comes out of that; like the New York Jets shopping quarterback Zach Wilson, or the Denver Broncos doing the same with Russell Wilson.

The Combine is what it is. The football people need to measure the prospects six ways from Sunday. I get that, but it’s not that interesting.

However the NFL somehow turned into another marketing opportunity.

Oops … they did it again.

Steve Mazurak and that Jim Hopson group are the only ones to take a bow. To be more frank. This franchise was a joke/clown care prior to 2007. They got it right on the field with Roy Shivers, but the crap off the field is why the adults needed to be hired. Look where we are today and how far we done fell? This is not on the Marketing Department. This is right on the head of the worst CEO in the CFL. The onfield product sucks. They are not winning more than 5 games this 2024 and attendance continues… Read more »

Never thought I could agree with Obama, but there it is! Reynolds is panicking, and no marketing or “game day experience” will ever mask the ineptitude of his lack of leadership skills. Accountants are not trained to do ANYTHING except count money: no leadership or project or mentoring or working with people! I’ve worked in 3 organizations that let accountants get to the top, all disasters. So agreed, Board and President/CEO have to go before I spend another nickel on tickets or paraphernalia. How about give us a good, solid, hardworking team that we can be proud of? Then tickets… Read more »

Roddy – you’re the only person that tried to make Canada’s team stick…. and it didn’t.
