A coupla three or more thoughts entering the weekend …

#1 – It’s a shame that the discussion around the 4 Nations Faceoff hockey tournament has devolved into rehashing the fans’ booing the U.S. national anthem Thursday night at the Bell Centre in Montreal.

Of course it all has to do with the maniacal actions of U.S. President Donald Trump.

American player Matthew Tkachuk – who led the USA to a 6-1 win over Finland – said afterwards “he didn’t like it”.

I was told enough during Covid to “stick to sports” (even though there were no sports) that I eventually got the message. Glad I did.

So I’ll say this to the fans: “Stick to hockey”.

Besides, none of this should be surprising in an era where respect has gone out the window in all facets of life. Canadians not respecting the Donald Trump. Or the USA. Trump not respecting Canada.

It’s a mess.

#2 – The body of the 2024 NFL season isn’t even cold yet but they’re already talking about Aaron Rodgers.

Lord, love us.

On the weekend the New York Jets told the 41-year old quarterback they’re moving on from him, and he has yet to decide if he’ll retire.

Be prepared, if you dare, for months and months of drama over whether Aaron Rodgers will play this season or not and if so, where?

Frankly I’ve had my fill of Rodgers but if you weren’t aware, he threw for almost 4,000 yards last year on a bad New York team and had a touchdown-to-interception ratio of 28-11.

Seems like he still has some in the tank.

Potential landing spots? Tennessee, Vegas and New Orleans seem to lead the list.

And #3 – I’m casually following the Western Hockey League these days, and I’m guessing the same goes for you.

That shouldn’t be surprising with Regina and Moose Jaw languishing at the bottom of the Eastern Conference standings, by a lot.

But an interesting item came out Thursday that the WHL is planning to expand to Penticton, BC as early as next season.

I’ve long been told their arena is the nicest Junior A facility in Canada, barely nudging out Estevan.

However I can’t say for myself, since I’ve never seen it.

Hey – there’s a good item for my second bucket list!

That’s today’s Rod Pedersen Commentary.
