Commentary: Super Bowl? Super Expensive

(Listen daily for the RP Commentary on All New Hits 98 & LTD Radio)
We continue to work our way to Sunday’s Super Bowl featuring the Seahawks and Patriots in San Francisco.
Figuratively that is, not literally.
If there’s one criticism I have of the NFL’s “Big Game” – and it’s only one – it’s the fact it’s gotten way out of the price range of the average sports fan.
Don’t get me wrong, you’ll see thousands upon thousands of NFL fans this week descending upon the Bay Area to make this the most celebrated weekend on the football calendar.
There’s no doubt about that. But there will be a lot of couch-surfing, a sea of campers and people sleeping in their car.
And will they be going to the game? Doubtful. Two years ago in Las Vegas, the lowest ticket price was $12,000. This year I hear it’s 14-grand.
Flights in the US actually aren’t that expensive these days, but I’m not a huge fan of traveling in the winter whether it’s by air, or land. And hotels in New Orleans for last year’s Super Bowl were $1,200 per night, even for a dingy place.
I skipped that one.
And will this year as well. Shoot, I bought a car this week with what I could’ve spent on a glitzy trip to Super Bowl.
The memories would be nice, but so too is air conditioning and I needed a comfortable ride to compliment my sturdy Jeep which looks cool, but isn’t entirely practical for getting around in the Florida heat.
Even Jon Ryan told us he’s going to Super Bowl this weekend, but on the Seattle Seahawks tab. That’s not hard to do when you’re named one of the top 50 Seahawks of all-time.
Oh, and for reasons which were up to the organizer, there will be no Sober Bowl party this year at Super Bowl, which I’ve hosted many times over the years, most recently at Super Bowl 58 in Las Vegas.
Hey – I’m totally okay with that. There will always be Super Bowl, and I’ll always be available.
That’s today’s Rod Pedersen Commentary.
