It’s Tuesday and time for the Good, the Great & the Ugly!

First the good: The Great 8 did it again.

Alex Ovechkin notched his second multi-goal game in a row last night and has now moved to within just 26 goals of catching Wayne Gretzky for the NHL’s career goals record. It looks like he’ll do it this year and the hype is already starting. (i.e. We’re going to be hearing about it pretty much everyday until he catches Wayne)

A hockey fan in Vancouver asked me on the weekend how I’ll feel if Ovechkin catches Gretzky. I responded that if he does, good for him. I don’t care that’s he’s Russian, or anything else. If he sets the record, he’ll have earned it.

Next the great: I’ve got enough Grey Cup leftovers to last till the New Year, at least.

It was a treat to run into our old pal Jon Ryan, the Super Bowl-winning Seattle Seahawks punter who played in the CFL with Sask, Winnipeg and Edmonton. He, of course, is a Regina kid.

Jon was adorned head-to-toe in Seahawks gear and was working at the Seahawks tent in the Fan Festival at Vancouver Convention Centre.

You see, Jon lives in L.A. with his actress/comedian wife Sara Colonna and when he’s not chasing her around – she recently did a residency at MGM in Vegas, opening for Brad Garrett – Jon represents the Seahawks at events all over the continent.

I thought to myself, “What a great job!” Then I realized I got a pretty awesome job too.

So it’s all great.

And lastly, the ugly: The blue & white confetti was still floating in the air after the Grey Cup when Toronto Argos running back Ka’Deem Carey took a knife and gashed his former team, the Calgary Stampeders.

He called them a “joke of an organization” and pointed the finger squarely at Head Coach & GM Dave Dickenson who Carey said “is pointing fingers” and “gets rid of everybody but himself.”

We were all shocked, moreso with the timing of it all.

Stamps fans shouldn’t be too alarmed. I had a short, but deep, talk with Stampeders President Jay McNeil at Grey Cup and rest assured, he isn’t fooled. By anything, or anyone.

As for Ka’Deem Carey, he’s best to quickly learn the lesson we all do eventually in life.

You’re better to look forward, not back.

You’re not going that way anyway.

That’s today’s Rod Pedersen Commentary.

I had a Direct TV and later an NHL package. I’ve watched a large portion of Ovechkin’s games and I can say without hesitation. That’s the greatest NHL Player to do it. Now if he were Canadian or American maybe even Swedish the red carpet would be rolled out. His politics and passport make him a regional star in a small market like Washington DC. He is also the guy to finally put that team on the map and I put him at the same level as Mario Lemieux/Pittsburgh in doing so. Had there not been labor stoppages and had… Read more »
