Commentary: The Good, The Great & The Ugly

It’s Tuesday and time for the Good, the Great & the Ugly!
First the good: Ever since the NHL schedule came out in the summer, they were building up Monday night’s game in Edmonton as “The Rematch”.
The NHL was referring to last year’s Stanley Cup Final where Florida beat Edmonton in seven games and on Monday night they’d meet again for the first time.
And the game lived up to its billing! The intensity inside Rogers Place came through the TV screens for those of us watching on Amazon Prime, and the Panthers prevailed again, winning 6-5 for a comeback victory.
It’s nice when the games live up to the hype.
Next the great: There were two Monday Night Football games going on at the same time. I’m not sure why they do that, but it certainly gives us sportstalk hosts plenty to discuss so I’m not complaining.
The results were predictable – Minnesota bombed Chicago 30-12 and Atlanta squeaked past the Raiders in Vegas 15-9.
What’s great about it? Well for the Vikings – and plenty of my friends are fans or theirs – they moved into a tie for first in the N-F-C North with their seventh consecutive victory. The Vikings are 12-and-2, matching the Detroit Lions atop the division. Three teams in that division will play in the playoffs that’s what’s great.
And lastly the ugly: What’s going on with the Buffalo Sabres is seemingly as ugly as it gets, but also the first of its kind.
Buffalo’s lost 10 in a row, coach Lindy Ruff says he’s never seen anything this bad, and on Monday there was reportedly a meeting between the players and the team owner.
I’ve heard of many “players only” meetings, but nothing like this.
What came out of it? Apparently they’re not changing a thing and believe they can get out of it themselves. That folks, as you know, is the definition of insanity.
If I owned the Buffalo Sabres, I’d install alumni Matthew Barnaby in a key role. The guy bleeds Blue & Gold and nobody loves that franchise more than him. He’d fix it, or he’d die trying.
But for some reason, they haven’t asked for my advice!
That’s today’s Rod Pedersen Commentary.
