It’s Tuesday and you know what that means: time for the Good, the Great & the Ugly!

First the good: Good if you’re a Leafs fan, bad if you’re a fan of the Flames.

All eyes Monday night were on Amazon Prime’s showcase game featuring the Flames at the Maple Leafs and is it turned out, Calgary didn’t stand a chance.

Toronto coach Craig Berube reported before the game that his players were (ticked) off at their recent slump, and ready to take it out on the Flames.

6-2 Leafs was the final.

I spent more time musing over the Amazon Prime broadcast, and quite enjoyed seeing John Shannon on there.

Next the great: Baseball season is underway! The Dodgers and Cubs got the 2025 MLB season underway early this morning at the Tokyodome in Japan.

Although L.A. was missing stars Freddie Freeman and Mookie Betts, they still had star Shohei Ohtani in the lineup and that’s who people paid to see.

Since the vast world of baseball’s been opened up to me, you wouldn’t believe the people who’ve come out of the woodwork as big-time fans of the game.

Obviously, that’s realllllly great!

And lastly the ugly: I’m keeping a real close eye on sportsbetting and to be honest so should you.

These small bets of a lunch here or there, or $20 on a March Madness bracket or Stanley Cup Playoff pool, have never gotten me in trouble. And they did what they were intended — got us following the games more closely.

But pay attention to the betting apps, the gambling sites, and who your loved ones are cavorting with in-person and online.

Slapping down your credit card and never looking back is getting a lottttt of young people in big trouble, FAST.

Addiction is addiction. None of the following people care about you: the clerk at the liquor store, the dealer at the blackjack table, the drug dealer, or the nice person (or bot) taking bets at the sportsbook.

Check in … before it’s too late. It can get real ugly in the blink of an eye.

That’s today’s Rod Pedersen Commentary.

Rod, keep banging the drum on the gambling. You’re on the right side here. We grew up on Sport Select and the like. Pretty innocent stuff and a probably hard to get yourself into too much trouble. You actually had to get off the couch and go fill the ticket in at the gas station. Was never much of a gambler; the slots are rigged and everyone at the poker table knew more than me so stayed away from those too. Then I went to Vegas and bet on some sports, maybe $10 or $20 total a night, just for… Read more »

I know a guy who takes screen pics of his winning tickets from slots then shows them off to people like he’s accomplished something, I always smile and say wow that’s nice, I asked him one time, and where are the pics of all the dough you dumped in before you won, went silent pretty quick. Casinos and sports books aren’t built on winners.
