COMMENTARY: THE GOOD, THE GREAT & THE UGLY
(Listen daily for the RP Commentary on the All New Hits 98 CKHD & LTD Radio)
It’s Tuesday and time for another edition of the Good, the Great & the Ugly …
First the good: It’s a first, but it appears the CFL is holding its annual winter meetings in Nashville in conjunction with the national coaches convention, which brings all the U.S. coaches together at the same time.
Kudos to the CFL for having media availabilities with all their coaches and GMs, virtually, and they’ve gotten lots of press out of it.
Free pub is the best kind of pub.
Next the great: It’s been awhile now since we were able to say the Vancouver Canucks are for real. And last night they proved it again, spanking the New York Rangers 6-3 at MSG in a battle of two of the NHL’s top teams.
What’s great about it? The job done by Canucks head coach Rick Tocchet. If you noticed, it’s virtually the same team that got Travis Green and Bruce Boudreau fired.
In fact, this unit might not be as good as the one those guys had, with captain Bo Horvat asking for a trade out of there to the Islanders last year.
But Elias Petterson notched four points last night, and he’s shed the tag of being an “under-achiever”.
Tocchet, right now, is the NHL Coach of the Year and you may be surprised to know he’s been coaching in the NHL since 2002.
He’s officially been coaching longer than he played.
And lastly the ugly: Forget about the games. What’s got tongues wagging the past 24 hours is the trade between Philadelphia and Anaheim. The Flyers shipped disgruntled forward Cutter Gauthier, the star of this year’s World Juniors for Team USA, to the Ducks for former Canadian star Jamie Drysdale.
Philly GM Daniel Briere says that as of late, Gauthier refused to even talk to them about a contract and forced a trade. Wouldn’t talk to them at all.
He’s not the first, and won’t be the last. Eric Lindros went on to a Hall of Fame career.
That’s today’s Rod Pedersen Commentary

Point of parliamentary order The Good? – In 2008 the Roughriders “Historian” took issue with a situation similar. It was a global economic meltdown – well not here because Stephen Harper actually was a Ph.D Economist and the fundamentals of our financial and investment sectors were secure. With that stated the Roughriders brass had a retreat planned to Las Vegas. He writes that based on circumstances and it being a community owned team the optics are not good. Guess what? They caved and cancelled. My guess is they did their retreat in the basement of a Travelodge on Albert Street.… Read more »
