It’s Tuesday and time for the Good, the Great & the Ugly!

First the good: I watched with amusement as rookie Denver quarterback Bo Nix got into a sideline spat with head coach Sean Payton in Sunday’s 34-18 Broncos win over Las Vegas on Sunday.

Perhaps I should say “interest” rather than “amusement”.

Undoubtedly the 61-year old Payton is not used to having his players clap back at him when he gets on their back (in this case, for Nix changing the play pre-snap).

But the pair quickly told each other “I love you” and went on to victory.
Sounds like a match made in heaven!

Next the great: The curtain rises on the 2024-25 NHL season in North America tonight and the three-game slate runs in a triple-header, on national television.

First, St. Louis is at Seattle. Next, the Florida Panthers raise their Stanley Cup banner and then host Jeremy Swayman and the Boston Bruins. And finally, the Utah Hockey Club plays its first-ever game when they welcome Connor Bedard and the Chicago Blackhawks.

This … is all kinds of great.

And lastly, the ugly: For the first time since 1945 the CFL playoffs won’t feature a team from Alberta.

The Saskatchewan Roughriders exercised a double takeout with Saturday’s 28-24 win at Edmonton, eliminating both the Elks and Calgary Stampeders from the playoff race with three weeks left in the regular season.

While I stop short of chuckling at those teams’ misfortunes – that would be twisted – I don’t feel sorry for them either.

You can bet there was no sympathy in Wild Rose Country when the Roughriders struggled over the decades.

But those two teams are now in Garbage Time and they can’t start the clean up till the worst of the storm hits, which is the end of the regular season.

And that’s ugly.

That’s today’s Rod Pedersen Commentary.
