COMMENTARY: THE HYPE

#1 – So many things are on the table when it comes to discussion in the National Hockey League and one of those is the upcoming All Star Game.
Many fans and media are bemoaning the fact the Blue Jackets’ Boone Jenner and the Ducks’ Frank Vatrano have been named All Stars already while legit stars like William Nylander, Cale Makar and even Mark Scheifele have not.
But that’s why they have the fan vote, which closes on Thursday.
It’s about hype, and the NHL has a lot.
#2 – Same goes for the NFL and this upcoming weekend is the best of the year with six playoff games on Wildcard Weekend. There’s ALWAYS an upset in the six. Sometimes more than one.
I don’t think there will be one in the AFC games but in the NFC, I could see Tampa Bay upsetting the favoured Philadelphia Eagles.
But let’s be clear: this is NOT betting advice! It’s just who I’m rooting for, as a longtime Baker Mayfield fan.
And of course, for the favoured Cowboys to beat the Packers in Dallas.
#3 – We follow the Dub year-round, but I can see why casual fans just start to perk up now. They’re tuning in at a good time! Moose Jaw, Saskatoon and Swift Current all feel they have a shot to go a long ways this spring and I can’t tell you the last time that particular troika has been in this position. It’s outstanding for those markets.
And #4 – Still very much enjoying the coverage out of CFL winter meetings in Nashville. We learned Tuesday the Riders have redone the contract of quarterback Trevor Harris (a.k.a. a paycut). That’s similar, I guess, to what they did with Cody Fajardo in a past life. Why does the Green & White need to keep redoing their quarterbacks’ contracts?
And Edmonton boss Chris Jones saying he won’t coddle his players, and didn’t consult with incumbent Tre Ford before signing veteran quarterback McLeod Bethel Thompson is just straight entertainment.
Mark me down as another asking … “Is It June Yet?”
