COMMENTARY: THE MONDAY AFTER
(Listen daily for the RP Commentary on Cat Country 98 & LTD Radio)
What a weekend! Let’s review:
1 – There seemed to be few surprises in the NFL in Week 12, and don’t forget a lot of the games were in the books already with the Thanksgiving triple-header and the league’s first-ever Black Friday game having already been played.
My biggest takeaway was the woeful New England Patriots who lost to the hapless New York Giants and at 2-9, now have the worst two-season run of owner Robert Kraft’s tenure.
Whether it’s firing Bill Belichick or not, or signing a quarterback in free agency, they’ve got to do something. I’d feel sorry for Patriots fans if they weren’t so insufferable!
2 – On the topic of football, bravo to the Regina Rams and City of Regina for landing the 2025 Vanier Cup – Canadian University’s championship game. It was announced on Saturday.
It’s only been in Saskatchewan once; 2006 in Saskatoon. I looked it up and the weather that day was listed as “frigid” by Environment Canada, with a temperature between minus-20 and -30 at kickoff, and that was before the wind!
But weather is a luck-of-the-draw at this time of year and if they played this week, it’d be quite mild.
Regardless, Saskatchewan does things better than anyone and prepare for this event to have a mini-Grey Cup feel.
Our intention is to broadcast the RP Show live from there all week.
And #3 – Hockey, hockey, hockey. It’s always close to our heart.
That U.S. Thanksgiving date is more than just a rule-of-thumb, it seems. It really is a true cutoff line, or even midnight for Cinderella teams.
In the Dub, the Regina Pats have lost five in a row and have apparently come back to reality. In the NHL, the Anaheim Ducks have lost six in a row while Minnesota’s losing streak is at seven.
On the positive side, the Oilers have won back-to-back games and scored 13 goals in the process. Maybe they truly have figured it out.
For their sake, let’s hope so. Because once your troubles are behind you, you’re not supposed to look back.
