COMMENTARY: TIME WILL TELL

(Listen daily for the RP Commentary on Cat Country 98 & LTD Radio)

It’s an all-CFL edition of the Good, the Great & the Ugly!

First the good: It’s good that the Saskatchewan Roughriders’ coaching search is apparently reaching a conclusion. As was noted in our weekend 10 Things column (Point 8), it appears the Riders have narrowed their search to two candidates: Winnipeg offensive coordinator Buck Pierce and Toronto defensive coordinator Corey Mace.

I’m sure they’re both great coaches and great guys, but I think that’s a mistake. Neither has played nor coached in Saskatchewan before (other candidates have, like Paul LaPolice and Henry Burris for example), and with a critical hire at this time such as this, that would be a priority for me. That, and prior head coaching experience.

As always, time will tell!

Next the great: It was absolutely great to have Cody Fajardo on the RP Show and have him set the record straight on a lot of things, including his rough departure from Saskatchewan a year ago. Cody wanted to make it clear that he harbours no ill feelings and when your time is up, it’s up. (Where have we heard that before?)

It’s great to see him smiling ear-to-ear and know that he overcame the adversity. That grin will likely last through the Holidays. After that, it’s time to think about next season and on Monday’s show we had to look it up; the French translation for repeat is “repeter.”

And finally, the ugly: Toronto Argonauts quarterback Chad Kelly has gone into “media darkness” for the time being and no one’s saying when he’ll come out.

I’m told he’s not doing any interviews and his social media accounts are locked down. This all comes after his meltdown in the Eastern Final and subsequent tales he told about it during Grey Cup Week.

Hey – we all go through embarrassing moments in life. Whether it’s a flub on national TV or peeing your pants on the school bus. Stress is relative. What matters is how you handle it, and the best way is to take it on the chin and emerge better for it.

Hopefully Chad Kelly is getting the help he needs.

That’s today’s Rod Pedersen Commentary

(The Rod Pedersen Show airs daily at 12 pm & 5 pm ET on Game+TV, WQEE, Podcast & YouTube Live)

Time isn’t going to tell anything that already has not been told. If it’s down to Buck Pierce and Cory Mace then what it says is about half dozen guys turned this interview down. Why would they hire first time Coaches? – but more important guys who have never worked anywhere else and can’t bring with them Assistant Coaches? If Buck Pierce wants his career to go the route of former flavour of the month Paul LaPolice thne he’d best avoid Saskatchewan. – Lapo could not make chicken salad out of chicken $h!t from two Head Coaching stints where his… Read more »

Jeremy “CTE” O’Day is tasked by his Boss to hire the “next great Roughriders Head Coach”

Pittsburgh in 40 years has had Chuck Noll, Bill Cowher, Mike Tomlin.

Saskatchewan:

  • Jim Eddy/Walt Pasadowski/Ron Lancaster/Joe Faragalli/Reuben Berry/Jack Gotta (Al Davis hired him)/Jim Daley/Danny Barrett/Cal Murphy & Ray Jauch – loooooong past their primes/Greg Marshall/ and of course The Honky Tonk Man.

The 3 “great” Coaches in my lifetime lasted a combined 6 seasons if that.

So the reality is this is not a good job, it’s not a good organization, and the claim to fame is they sell a lot of merchandise.

It’s become highly apparent Jeremy O’Day and Craig Reynolds running the Saskatchewan Roughriders team are persona non grata within the professional coaching ranks. Nobody in their right mind with the prerequisite coaching credentials wants to be associated with the aforementioned O’Day Reynolds as it’s a regime going downward fast. When will the people of this COMMUNITY OWNED TEAM rise up and voice their displeasure and demand O’Day Reynolds be relieved of their respective duties immediately never to return.
