They say the only constant in life is change.

And sports are a great mirror of life. Although, there’s one fanbase out there that’s gotta be wondering if their curse will ever end.

As far as change goes, many of us thought Wayne Gretzky’s long-standing NHL goals record of 894 would never go down. But lo and behold, Alex Ovechkin scored again Wednesday night and is now just two goals away from tying The Great One’s mark.

If you weren’t paying attention before, you will be now.

And the CFL got a new Commissioner on Wednesday, with Stewart Johnston jumping over from TSN, where he’s been President since 2010.

Don’t know the man, but I know dozens of folks who’ve worked for, and with him, and they all say great things.

Do you like what TSN’s become the past 15 years? Is it still Canada’s Sports Leader?

And is it even accurate to view Stewart Johnston’s resume as simply reflection of Canada’s most popular cable channel?

I think it is.

I’m excited to see where this goes for the CFL.

As far as things go that don’t seem to change – the exception that proves the rule if you will – the Saskatoon Blades were swept out of the playoffs in Round 1 Wednesday night courtesy of a 6-2 home thrashing at the hands of the Calgary Hitmen.

This comes after the Blades drew 10,000 to Sasktel Centre for their final home game of the regular season; a first place showdown with PA. Granted, the Hitmen were heavily favored, but the playoffs are supposed to be a new season.

And now The Drought goes on. Forget about Rick Folk. Or the Gary Bettman Curse.

The Saskatoon Blades have never won the WHL title since the league’s inception in 1966.

Longtime Blades owner Rick Brodsky told me last summer, “If there’s one thing I take away from it, it’s how hard it is to win.”

Truer words have never been spoken.

That’s today’s Rod Pedersen Commentary.
