Commentary: We’ll Take It!

It’s Tuesday and time for the Good, the Great & the Ugly!

First the good: Don’t look now, but NHL training camps open this week. And after just a couple of practices, the teams go head-to-head in some places beginning Friday.

The NHL Southeast Rookie Showcase moves to Nashville this year and the tourney opens on Friday with the Florida Panthers taking on the host Predators at 2 pm. At 5:00, the Carolina Hurricanes face the Tampa Bay Lightning.

Now don’t get too excited; it’s not Tkachuk vs Stamkos, but it’s still Panthers rookies vs Preds rookies.

We’ll take it!

Next the great: We were leaning on a fence Friday night watching a Florida high school game between the Boca Bobcats and St. Andrews Scots.

Rival coach Matt Dubuc of nearby Cardinal Gibbons High School was scouting the game and asked me to join. Of course I said yes.

In our chat, Dubuc – a CFL alum with Toronto and Winnipeg – looked at me and said “It looks like the CFL is making a comeback?”

He was referring to the bulging crowds we’ve seen over the past couple of weekends. At least, that’s the way it looks on TV.

Again, we’ll take it! Let’s see if the interest continues right through to Grey Cup in Vancouver.

And lastly the ugly: I rarely listen to local sportstalk radio anymore because it’s all Dolphins, all the time. Trust me I get it, I would too, but I’m a Cowboys fan.

So I’m not sure how this Tyreek Hill situation’s going to turn out; whether the cop who arrested him Sunday morning before the game will be disciplined, or if Hill himself will face more heat.

Frankly, I don’t care.

But Week 2 in the NFL kicks off on Thursday with the Buffalo Bills visiting these same Miami Dolphins.

Funny, I haven’t heard one complaint about a short week!

Maybe I will if the Dolphins lose.
