COMMENTARY: Y’ER WELCOME
(Listen daily for the RP Commentary on the All New Hits 98 CKHD & LTD Radio)
Wednesdays are for random thoughts and we run the gamut today:
#1 – If last night’s Leafs-Oilers game was a Stanley Cup Final preview, Edmonton fans will wanna sign up! Toronto may have jumped out to a 2-0 lead – including an Auston Matthews goal just 27 seconds into the game – but the Oilers held on and Ryan McLeod scored the winner with 3:05 to go in a 4-2 Edmonton victory.
It was their franchise record 11th win in a row. (Pittsburgh holds the league record at 17, set in 1993)
For the Leafs, it was their fourth straight loss and now Calgary is buzzing as Toronto visits the Saddledome on Thursday.
#2 – There’s been much debate over the Roughiders new coaching staff, which was announced on Monday. They’re young, but not inexperienced. And there’s a definite Calgary flare but as they say, imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. The Riders have made no secret over their desire to emulate the Stampeders success.
Optimism is off the charts in the Rider Nation, and that comes directly from the positive vibes of rookie coach Corey Mace.
#3 – All leagues are the same in this regard: if you’re not playing in the playoffs, then your team is likely involved in the coaching carousel. The Atlanta Falcons and L.A. Chargers are conducting interviews this week and they’re talking to Bill Belichick and Jim Harbaugh. My football insiders say Belichick will go to the Falcons while Harbaugh will go to the Raiders.
They also say that whether the Cowboys head job comes open or not, Dallas is not a desirable job for a coach.
Gee … I wonder why?
And #4 – I’m casually following the fledgling Pro Womens Hockey League. If not necessarily watching the games, I’m following the scores.
And in this inaugural season the league doesn’t have official team names yet. Officials say they were rushed and didn’t have time.
Here’s a novel concept – why pick team names at all? I kind of like the simplicity and tidiness of “New York versus Montreal” and “Toronto vs Ottawa”.
Y’er welcome.

There’s nothing sweeter than watching the Maple Leafs lose.
Craig Reynolds or Jeremy O’Day are not John Hufnagel and never will be.
Great random thoughts that make others think and provide a response 1) The Leafs and to be clear that’s my team. I’m going to watch then in Winnipeg on January 27. They are not going to win a single thing. Maybe 2 games in the first round and that’s about it. Willie Nylander at $11M. I’ve said nothing changes. The last time I seen a player like him his name was Mike “700 Goals” Gartner. Now not all goals are created equal. Mike would get his 30 and shut it down. Same goes for Nylander. This team needs to run… Read more »
With regards to the Pro Womens Hockey League this is nothing more than propoganda and woke virtue signalling. Does anyone remember when the NHL had to b.e.g to get their games on the OLN network? I do. This was before Ovechkin/Crosby saved the league. Now in what world does a sub minor of minor leagues get on a legitimate network? This is where your subsidization dollars go and this is where an enitity like the NHL subsidizes this similar to the NBA and the WNBA. Meanwhile Osama Bin Laden sat courtside at New York Liberty games and the only people… Read more »
Chill out, it’s just hockey, man.
As for the PWHL, like with all sports I’ll start paying attention once Winnipeg gets a team. Until then the U of M Bisons are the only women’s hockey team I care about.
I respect you’re points, but I am passionate about mine and do my best to tell the truth and educate. This is not “just hockey”. If it was “just hockey” then no problem. Put a team together and go play in the Adult Safe League. This is social engineering and it’s done at such a significant detriment to women they don’t even know it. I’d encourage you to read The Creation of Patriarchy by Gerda Lerner. If they want true equality in every sense of the word. They would do what the great men of hockey have done. Go back… Read more »
2 or 3 weeks ago you said the Oilers would miss the playoffs… what gives?
They started to win. It’s not that hard to figure out.
Anything for clicks …
I recall that prediction too.
#2 – there’s no optimism in Riderville just yet with Cory Mace and his recently announced coaching staff, that’s a jumping the gun fodder. The 2024 CFL Season has yet to start, then we’ll see where things will proceed. Were kinda of expecting a drastic downward turn ala the Devone Claybrooks fiasco with a rookie head coach. If the Roughriders want a recipe for success look over to East in Manitoba with the Bombers Football Club, Calgary?
